“Don't bother! Huge waste of money."”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 June 2011

While Lake Orta was beautiful, San Rocco totally missed the mark. The rooms were cold, corporate and completely at odds with the beauty of the city.

The staff (especially the waiters at the overpriced, stuffy, overproduced restaurant that looked and felt like you were on a cruise ship) were rude and not helpful. Although, they will give you an umbrella if it rains...the only thing is, if you don't bring it back, it will cost you 50 Euros. 50 Euros!!!

There is no internet in the rooms (fine) but the internet in the main part of the hotel was out for the 2.5 days we stayed there and nobody seemed like they were in any hurry to fix it. (it was still out when we left).

Our king bed was two twin beds pushed together, leaving a huge uncomfortable crack in the middle.

Finally, the pool had no water in it. In June.

This was a truly disappointing hotel experience, not to mention, it was also the most expensive place we stayed while in Italy for 2.5 weeks. Definitely not worth it.

There's a brochure in the minimalist room that tells you the "philosophy" behind the renovation of this hotel. It's incomprehensible. So is what they did to this building. The hallways are chocolate brown. The rooms are slate grey. They're tiny, monastic, the size of a monk's cell. The beds are comfortable. End tables tiny. A very long desk; one chair; a large ottoman; a slip of a window onto gorgeous Lake Orta.

Why, oh why go brown and slate grey on the water? Comparing this with the open airy Grand Hotel Fassano on Lake Garda, where we stayed in September, this one fails utterly to capture what you'd want in a seaside hotel.

Orta is often socked in with clouds and fog. We had two sunny days. I can't imagine how depressing the rooms would be in rain and bad weather.

The restaurant was very expensive, but very fine. Stay away from the pasta; eat the risotto -- the chef won a prize for one of his risotto creations.

The common rooms are bizarre. One very long room with strange "modern" furniture fronting the lake. A lounge for drinks with comfortable, but inelegant leather chairs.

A great situation, right on the water. But a desecration in terms of the renovation.

And...you spend ten dollars for WiFi, but the only place it's available is in a lounge.

Cold, modern renovation of historic monastery. No carpets, so you hear every person who walks down the corridor past your room. Minimal furniture in your room -- one plastic chair. Overrated and over-priced. I don't carry a computer when traveling and the only way to check email was the hotel's own office computer, the use of which i was told would be a "favor" by the desk clerk. Staff competent -- some very nice, some cold. Catalog for the Body Center reads like a satire of self-indulgence.

September was a perfect time to visit- Not too busy but still very warm. This is a good hotel in a fantastic location. The lake view was amazing and the hotel was pretty unique with modern, clean comfortable rooms set in a historic location. Staff were also very attentive and I would highly recommend this hotel if you are looking for a relaxing break.

We stayed for 4 days at the San Rocco and I think it would be hard to beat the location and quality. It's expensive, and even by European standards the rooms are a bit small but the view is fantastic and it it offers a lovely haven from what can be a very busy little town on a summers day. Being able to park on the premises is a real bonus. If anything it takes itself a little too seriously but perhaps this is simply a laid-back Aussie talking.
