This is difficult as it will be my first somewhat negative response in 4 years of using Tripadvisor.
My girlfriend and I are very laid back people and are not those grumpy 'always finding fault' folks who seem to want everything for nothing.
The Casa Calicantus is a delightful old building with many antique and original features. All the rooms we saw were simply but tastefully furnished. One of the main reasons we chose here was the fact that Rossanna spoke excellent English and was very helpful. Being our first visit to Milan, this was very important to us as we only had 3 days there and wanted to see as much as possible, but without going down the boring 'tour guide' route.
However, when we arrived we were greeted by a lovely, friendly lady who unfortunately couldnt speak a word of English! Ok, before everyone screams at me, 'well, you're in Italy, what did you expect!' I speak German, French, Slovak and some Chinese, but I can't learn EVERY language! We had our phrase book, but just couldn't understand what she was saying back to us! But she was very nice.
No problem, we were sure Rosanna would be there in the morning. Our room was pleasant, although the bathroom looked extremely tired, the bed very hard, with no extra pillows anywhere and no hot water. Breakfast in the morning was very basic, just pre-packed biscuits, cereals and cakes. Everything sweet. Nothing fresh or savoury. Definitely not even the most basic of continental breakfasts. Still no Rosanna.
That's it really. Didn't see Rosanna during our stay, although she had been there as we noticed English messages left on other doors. So we blundered about Milan trying to pick up info from Info offices (who also couldnt speak English!!) and generally not getting anywhere fast. Didnt have hot water for our entire stay.
Lets just say that for 110 euros a night I expected something more.
On saying all that The Casa Calicantus is a lovely property in a nice area. Within easy walking distance from all the main sights. If only the language barrier hadn't been such an obstacle, I'm sure we would have gotten our pillows, hot water, tourist assistance and breakfast sorted out. Would still recommend, but make sure you either speak Italian, or that there is an English speaking person there during your stay.

This B & B is a hidden gem. It's actually an old family home not far from the northern end of Park Sempione, with easy tram access to the Duomo (or you can walk in 25 minutes) and close to Cadorna train station (rail access to Malpensa airport). Rossana is such a warm host that you will feel instantly comfortable here. The continental breakfast is magnificent. If you love history and authenticity and you are budget-conscious, then this is for you.
