As many other reviews have stated, the extensive floor to ceiling scaffolding greets you when you enter the Basilica of Sant’Andrea. None of the side chapels can be seen except for the first chapel to the left which contains Mantegna’s tomb. From the entrance, it appears that there is little to see, but do continue down the long nave to view both the North/South Transepts and the main altar/apse areas which you can only view from a small area, that is roped off.

If you are fluent in Italian, ask one of the volunteers to take you to the crypt which can only be accessed with their help to view the area where allegedly, the reliquary containing the blood of Christ is kept. As with most of the churches in Italy, it’s closed from noon to 3:30ish.

There was major interior renovations going on when we visited but the inner part was done and very nice looking. Worth a visit, for sure.

Large scale construction work ongoing internally. Could be a very impressive sight when scaffolding etc removed.
