“High End but Why Not”
Reviewed 23 December 2011

Last June we decided at the last minute to modify our Italian trip and go to Lake Maggiore. Needing to find a hotel we got on-line and checked Trip Advisor and saw the Regina Palace. Even though their three day rate was pricey, we decided to go for it. Upon arriving we knew we had made the right decision. A very stately and elegant hotel, a bit worn around some of the edges, it is in a great location within walking distance to all attractions. Stressa is nothing but tourism and while that brings with in lots of souvenir shops, there are also a number of very good restaurants. Be sure to take the boat/train/train combo that takes you up the lake to Switzerland, and then back over the mountains into Italy by train, and then another train back to Stressa.

Room Tip: Get one overlooking the lake.

The hotel is old but in good condition with friendly & helpful staff. The food was good but not outstanding and the rooms small but adequate and clean.
The hotel is right on the Lake Promenade with superb views from the front lawn.
Stresa is fairly small but with plenty of bars, cafes and tourist shops - there is a particularly good ice cream parlour. There are numerous boat trips on the Lake starting close to the hotel.

We spent a week at the Regina Palace as part of a package tour. The room on the 3rd floor was rather small but perfectly adequate, overlooking the car park and gardens. It had a tiny balcony but with enough room for 2 chairs. The furniture was good though the beds rather hard. The bathroom was fine with a good shower but the soaps etc were poor quality and not what one would expect from a hotel of this calibre. There were plenty of clean towels each day.
The two lifts in the entrance hall were tiny and I would think would be a serious problem at peak season .The staff in the dining room were very friendly and efficient and the room itself very grand and atmospheric. As we were on an inclusive tour the choice of food was limited to 2 choices for each course which always included a soup dish and choice of meat or fish for a main course followed by a small choice of desert but disappointingly no tea/coffee was included.
We enjoyed the stay and would gladly return though the 60 euros per night quoted for a room overlooking the lake seems rather excessive. The bar on the ground floor had a good pianist each night but very few people used it as it had no atmoshere and felt more like a waiting room than a bar. It did not have an appealing layout.
The hotel has a fabulous location and is close to the centre of Stresa with fabulous views of the lake and islands. It is also conveniently placed for boat trips to all the islands and the station is a short walk behind the hotel. The town itself has a good variety of restaurants, bars and shops with very friendly people.

Room Tip: Not all rooms have a balcony so check this out first. Lifts are exceptionally small and busy so choo...
