“Step back in time at Lido Palace”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 June 2013

If you want to get a feel of how the Italian Lakes were a century ago, this is the hotel for you. It was built in 1857 as a private villa and in 1879 Queen Victoria and her daughter Princess Beatrice, staying nearby, visited the villa because their entourage were being accommodated there. By 1908 the building had been expanded into a hotel and Winston Churchill and his wife Clementine spent their honeymoon in Room 124, now the hotel's largest suite. In the pretty hotel gardens there are statues of both to mark these visits, and there is plenty of information on display in the public rooms if you are interested to find out more. There is a definite atmosphere of the past here. We were assured that there were no ghosts, but instead a " mystery room" in the basement that has not been opened for years!

The hotel's public rooms are vast and opulent and almost make you feel as though you are letting the place down if you are not dressed in dinner jackets or ball gowns. The outside terraces, overlooking the pool and the glorious lake and mountain view, are the perfect setting for an evening aperitif.

Despite its size, the hotel is family-run and the staff are unfailingly cheerful and helpful. The front rooms, overlooking the lake (well worth booking) have huge French windows opening onto a balcony, from which you can watch the plying to and fro of boats between Baveno and the three small islands nearby, and the constantly changing light over the water. Our bathroom was slightly disappointing, being a little cramped, with rather dim lighting.

We had one breakfast (in the room) and two dinners at the hotel, and would rate these reasonably highly, though on the expensive side.

The hotel's location, just a short walk from the village centre, the station and the boat terminal,
is excellent. It is just a pity that one can no longer experience the tranquillity of the past, given the amount of traffic that has to pass along the lakeside road. This does, however, die down by late evening.

The Lido Palace will give you a most enjoyable experience, and we highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Second or third floor, front rooms overlooking the lake offer the best view.

Reception was friendly and efficient.
From the first impression, it could easily be thought that the hotel decor qualifies as faded. However it is in fact in good condition, it is just the dowdy colours that make it seem a bit drab. Don't let this put you off. It is a nice comfortable place to stop. The rooms are a good size. Very comfortable bed. Wonderfully views of the lake. Make sure you get a lakeside room, ideally one with a balcony.
The air conditioning in the room is soundless. To such an extent that I am still not absolutely sure it was working, but as the room stayed at a pleasant temperature, I think it must have been.
There are a couple of quirks. If the management read this, perhaps they might consider adding a towel rail and a loo roll holder to the bathroom equipment.
Lovely shower over jacuzzi bath.
Just before we arrived they had come to the end of a 6 week period of very bad weather, so guest numbers were well down. Also pool and some of the grounds had obviously suffered from lack of attention during this period, but there were signs that things were getting back into order. The tennis court, hard court, had so much moss on it it could have passed for a grass court.
Breakfast cost €20 per head for the buffet, extortionate in my view so we did not partake. We ate in the restaurant one evening. Set menu and the food and service was excellent. Book a table by the window for the magnificent view.
For a good day out, book the Maggiore Express. A combined train and boat trip via Domodossola, to Locarno. The old part of Domodossola is particularly nice. Note prices in Locarno are extortionate. Boat trip back is a bit long winded, but overall a good trip.

A lovely place to stay on Lake Maggiore. The room was spacious and had a lovely view of the lake. The hotel is well located, close to the town of Baveno. Restaurants and the ferrt terminal are well within walking distance. Breakfast was more than ample but pricey.

Stayed here in May 2013 in lake view room with breathtaking and beautiful views across Lake Maggiore of islands and mountains. Staff were friendly, outstandingly helpful and efficient. Pretty gardens framed the view over the swimming pool and lake side beach to the gardens of Isola Bella and Isola Madre, for which the hotel was well situated. Easy access by ferry from Baveno to islands and other lake side towns and by train from Baveno too. Rooms are charming with a 1920's feel and elegance. Much nicer and with more character than the terribly smart International hotel chains. Delicious breakfast and good dinners. Plenty of space in reception rooms and on the terrace. Too busy having fun to try the fitness centre although it might have mitigated the pasta consequences.

Room Tip: Book a lakeview room.

The attitude of the service from Paolo and staff was outstanding! We had a problem with the booking agency and when we arrived after a long journey Paolo was all over it in terms of fixing a problem that he didn't cause. What could have been a bad start to our holiday turned out to be a highlight, with the only exception that we could not eat dinner in the hotel. This is a hotel that understands the true meaning of customer service and hospitality. Would highly recommend staying here. The history and location speak for themselves, particularly the Winston Churchill suite. Thanks for a great memory of Baveno.
