We had a birthday dinner for six (mostly adults with one teenager) and with some trepidation tried the "free hand tasting menu" (as opposed to the molecular one). (Note the ability to mix and match between the two tasting menus was a nice option and not one often seen in my experience.)

The food was simply fantastic. From the crab to the foie gras to the pasta to the pork belly. The sommelier, Carmine, was wonderful and did a great job helping us pick wine in a efficient and tasty way (read: no pressure whatsoever to needlessly upgrade wines to more expensive versions).

The service was simply delightful as well -- all of the staff were engaging and formal enough, but not too formal. We had a great time.

And did I mentioned the views? Simply stunning. This place isn't cheap, but for what it offers I think it's a solid deal and a great place for a special occasion.

As a family of 4 we showed up to our reservation looking pretty good (or so I thought). Upon arrival we were told there was a "dress code". I had no idea what the hostess was referring to, but apparently men were to wear long sleeves. They could however loan my husband and son a blazer. They took the high road and accepted the blazers. In the mean time, others in the restaurant looked average at best with linen shirts rolled up to the elbows or casual long sleeve sweaters with no collar, not to mention the toddlers in shorts and t-shirts roaming around. In any case, fast forward to the end of the evening, and what is the best way to return the blazer? Do you take it off and hand it back to the hostess? My husband chose to wear it out of the restaurant with the thought that he would return it the next day. We returned to our room and literally within 30 seconds, the phone was ringing and sure enough, it was the restaurant asking for the blazer to be returned. I burst out laughing on the phone, it was so ridiculous. The goofiness of the situation diminished the culinary experience. The breads were fantastic. We all had the tasting menu and 2 of us had the traditional version and 2 had the molecular. I don't think there was necessarily a clear winner, it seemed like each menu had an even number of courses that were better than the other. The king crab starter on the traditional menu was the best course of the evening. The liquid nitrogen ice cream was fun to watch. Overall a memorable evening, but for all the wrong reasons!

This restaurant in the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni is absolutely top notch! The food is incredible, the service impeccable, and the views overlooking Lake Como are breathtaking. There was live music and an imaginative, delicious menu. It is an expensive, upscale place for sure but the food, service, and atmosphere are all too worth it.

We arrived by boat for our reservation- it was the MOST beautiful and the nicest setting. There were 6 of us and we had an extraordinary meal - we tried both the traditional and the molecular degustation. Both were incredible. Service was top flight, the whole place was beautiful and the food was exquisite - a once in a lifetime experience.Fantastic!

During our stay at the Grand Hotel, we dined at two of the Grand Hotel's restaurants. This review is for Mistral Ristorante. We saved Mistral for our final night in Italy and are so very, very glad that we did. The ambience, food and staff made for a simply magical evening.

The dining area overlooks the breathtaking view of Lake Como. Mistral serves dinners only and so the magic began as the sun set over the lake. Words cannot describe the beauty of Bellagio. The pace of the dining experience was not rushed, nor was it slow. Each course was perfectly timed to allow us to enjoy each dish that was served. From the sommelier to our head waiter to the supporting waiters, we were treated with the utmost respect. No question about the menu or wines was too frivolous to ask. They graciously walked us through the courses so that we could decide what was best for us to eat.

We began our meal with complimentary appetizers and then requested the L'Asparago Croccante con Uovo in Camicia Crema (crunchy asparagus with poached egg served with fresh cheese cream, pea sprouts and black truffle) and Gamberi Rossi di Mazara al Vapore Con Salsa (steamed Sicilian prawns with cocktail sauce). Both appetizers were amazing. For our entree we both selected the Il Pesce del Nostro Lago al Burro e Salvia (fish from Lake Como sauteed in butter and sage). Wow, wow, wow. And for the grand finale, Tutto Cioccolato (an all-chocolate dessert to die for).

Simply a perfect way to end our stay in Italy. Wonderful memories, an absolutely amazing meal. We felt like royalty.
