€5 to access the bell tower for great views of the city - not well publicised as we had to ourselves on a busy August afternoon

The vibrant Piazza Vecchia is a medieval gathering space, surrounded by historic structures that have stood the test of time. We learned that Pope John XXIII once attended university in one of the buildings here; it is now a restaurant—one among many--with tables spilling out into the piazza. After visiting the stately Basilica, the Duomo and the Capella Colleoni all morning, we decided to pick up food from a nearby establishment, sit on a stoop under the Palazzo Della Ragione and enjoy a leisurely lunch, like everyone else. There was a lot to observe: we admired a bride and her entourage being photographed…we watched lovers whisper like there was no one else in the world…saw children feeding the pigeons before happily chasing them away. We noted an old solar calendar, inscribed on the stone floor and tried to figure out how it worked. Through it all, a musician played his steel drum. It was a pleasant and quite interesting place to stop and rest a while.

This this the most interesting piazza, surrounded by the duomo, town hall and the library. Built exactly where the ancient Roman forum was, it is a lovely and unexpected opening amidst the narrow streets of 'alta città'.

Lovely place in the hearth of the old town, you find there several historical buildings - palace, chapel, cathedral as well as few restaurants where you can taste Italian cuisine.
