“Living the high life in a postcard location”
Reviewed 3 May 2012

Location! Location! Location!
Could not believe this was our hotel.
Opulent!
Secure parking lot covered in wisteria overlooking the ocean on the way to Portofino.
Luxury inside from the front door to the tiniest of fixtures.
Modern fittings in an old style decor which is rich and classic
Breakfast is like dining 5 star.
Management most helpful
Wi Fi just would not work and could not email ... frustrating.
Portable clothes line over luxury bath tub
Tea/coffee facilities would be great to take out onto the balconies overlooking the ocean and gardens below.

Room Tip: Rooms on the road may be noisy but those at the back overlooking the ocean or garden are memorable.

Fabulous position, literally a 2 minute walk from the train station, 5 minute walk to the centre of town and it has amazing views!
Rooms are clean and comfortable and the breakfast reasonably good.
The cheap rooms in the villa have better views than the main building, just a little smaller. We stayed in both as after 1 night there were workman painting and they were happy to upgrade us to room with a balcony.
Staff were pleasant. We thought this was very good value and would stay again.

We went back and forth between a few hotels in Santa Margherita and eventually chose the Metropole. We are SO happy we did! After spending time walking and driving in the town, we were able to see some of the other hotels in town and ours was the best choice. We had originally booked the Junior Suite upgrade. The room was very large when they showed us to it, however the view from the balcony was a generous private sundeck overlooking the main street (& noise!) There are 3 other Junior Suites with better water views but they were booked.

Thankfully we were there in low-season and the staff was happy to show us some of the Standard Rooms with their balcony views. We chose Room 145, just one floor below the Suites. The room itself was smaller than the Suite, but the balcony view was to-die-for.

Also we were able to get great recommendations for restaurants and local things (where to buy wine, how to drive & park in Portofino) etc from the Concierge. They were always happy to help. We walked right out of the Hotel in the afternoon, through their beautiful manicured gardens and down to the water (all connected) to share a bottle of wine at sunset. The balcony of our room had a small fold-up table and two chairs and we enjoyed time out there after dinner in Santa Margherita center. Breakfast was a selection of average European hotel spread and the staff were very friendly and eager to bring you some beautiful Italian coffees & cappucino. Stay here and book Room #145.

Room Tip: Standard Room # 145 has an excellent view from the balcony and the bathroom window. See photos here!

I've been to Santa Margherita Ligure, one of the most charming towns on the Italian Riviera before, but I had stayed up in the hills. My sister and I really wanted to be near the water, but we were put off by the extra cost of most places. We took a chance on the Metropole last May, and we were pleasantly surprised at the location near the train station and on the water. The Metropole, about a 10-minute stroll to the main town, is the only hotel in this area with its own private "beach," with deck chairs, ample towels and a beautiful view of the whole bay. The breakfast buffet, which is included in the room rate, is also remarkable with fresh fruit, pastries, eggs, fresh ricotta and other cheeses, salumi and waiters in morning tuxes serving coffee and attending to the tables. We stayed for three nights, and could not have been happier. Plus, the front desk clerks were helpful and spoke some English. There is no other place I would stay in SM. One thing, though the rooms are soundproofed with the windows and doors closed, those closest to the road can be noisy if you like to sit on your balcony. Ask for a quiet room facing the gardens away from the road. Also, the clerks told me it is cheaper to call directly for a reservation rather than using hotels.com or Expedia.

Room Tip: Though the rooms are soundproofed with the windows and doors closed, those closest to the road can b...
