“Perfect B&B”

I cannot rave enough about this location! We were greeted by some very kind people, on the terrace overlooking the beautifully picturesque Italian countryside. The view alone made the place worth a visit, even if you are not staying here. There was a plate of appetizers and some delicious wine waiting for us. We were on our honeymoon, and this was an extremely romantic location. We stayed in the yellow house which offered us a large living room/bedroom, as well as a very well equipped kitchen, bathroom, and an outdoor patio where we took our dinners, which overlooked the entire farm. We took about four hours, on our first day, to explore the farm (which we had asked permission from the farm staff for). It was beautiful! Grape vines, lemon tress, apricot trees, cherry trees, fresh rosemary!

It was by far, the perfect place to stay. It was out of the way of the hustle and bustle of the small town. It was located at the top of a hill, and is definitely NOT handicapped accessible, but I walk with a cane, and I was able to walk to the top of the hill (not easily though). At the bottom of the driveway to the farm was a police station, which made me feel extremely safe. Mama Meri was very hospitable, and ensured that everything was perfectly in order, we had enough wine at the end of the day, a cool glass of water with freshly picked lemons (and a bowl of lemons in our apartment). It was a breath of fresh air... LITERALLY! The landscaping was stunning. The air smelled so sweet because of all the flowers that were growing. This was the PERFECT place to stay on a honeymoon. We had cherry trees growing outside the door to our cottage, and rosemary as well.

Breakfast was delicious, and more than enough to eat. There was one day where we were exhausted from hiking, and we did not wake up until noon. The staff caught us walking away from the farm without breakfast, and insisted that we sit down and eat so that we do not begin our day hungry! They were so kind to us. They noticed that we must need laundry to be done, and they did laundry for us! This location is the gold standard for B&B in our book. I would encourage anyone who stays at ANY of the Cinque Terre villages to stay at this location. It was the best place anyone could hope for.

Room Tip: Ask the staff which location would work best for your group, as they can accommodate couples as well...

If you are willing to take a short, steep hike up from the village of Monterosso then a wonderful, peaceful bed and breakfast is waiting for you. The trail is steep, but well lit at night. We stayed in the White House at the Buranco which is a winery on the hills up from Monterosso. Take a look at the fabulous pictures of this oasis. After the crowds of Rome and Florence, it was so relaxing to sit on the veranda and take in the flowers, the lemon grove and the vineyard that surrounds you. You're greeted with a kind welcome and a bottle of their own white wine. It's quiet, it's beautiful and most of all it's an escape from the hectic pace of traveling.

We were two couples traveling together, so the two bedroom villa was perfect for us. We even cooked our own dinner one night! The breakfast is served at 9:00 in the morning which, for us, was a bit late. We are early morning people and were gone each morning before the breakfast was served.

The support staff don't speak much English but they do manage to communicate with you. We felt cared for and welcomed!

We stayed here for 4 days in May and loved the quietness and serenity of the place which is surrounded by vines, lemon trees and olive groves. The two people who work there assisting the owners are delightful and nothing is too much trouble. We stayed in the yellow house which is for a couple and it was fine. We also looked at the other units and thought the one over the room that contained the vats of wine was the nicest for more than one couple (2 bedrooms) or for a family. It is possible to walk here from the train station if you have light luggage but otherwise they will arrange for a taxi if you let them know your time of arrival. (There are few taxis in Monterosso so it is a good idea). The drive took about 10 minutes and I was a bit concerned thinking we would have to walk all that way into town, but in fact there is a path into the town that just takes about 3 or 4 minutes that is not accessible for cars. Breakfast is the usual white rolls and jam, with cakes and coffee with hot milk provided.

We visited four of the five villages (not Corniglia) and we thought Monterosso was the nicest place to stay with more restaurants to choose from as well as a beach. Vernazza was still in the process of cleaning up after the flood although some places were open.

Room Tip: We stayed in the yellow house which is for a couple and it was fine. We also looked at the other un...

We met Julie on the path to her winery. She is one of the daughters of the owner. She and her sister were great hosts as we did some wine tasting and heard about what they did. I'm sure if we had not already booked a place to stay, we would have stayed here. The wine was great. The location was just a few hundred yards out of town but sitting there on their terrace watching everything unfold while drinking fantastic wine made for a special afternoon.

The Buranco Winery is a working farm. The farm workers come walking up the path and down into the lemon grove or into the vineyard. So do not go there with the expectation that you will be staying in luxury. That said, it is also a most delightful bed and breakfast about two hundred yards above the bustling tourist town of Monterosso. My daughter, son-in-law and I stayed two nights in a two bedroom suite on the second floor of what is shown on the website as the Pink House. It was roomy enough for the three of us. It was clean and had comfortable beds. There were a few flying bugs but the windows are unscreened and, as I said, you are on a farm. I sat and journaled and dozed on the patio outside our door after a long day of hiking like I would have if I had been home. The staff knew very little English, but they understood hospitality by greeting us with glasses of wine and hors d’oeuvres on our arrival the first night and as we gathered the second evening before going to town for dinner. The breakfast on the outdoor patio was totally unique and included chocolates the first day. The view from the patio and walk-way is simply gorgeous and totally relaxing above the busy town of Monterosso. Looking at our pictures, I cannot believe that I stayed in such a lovely spot. We found the Cinque Terra to be hectic and very touristy. Our stay here was a highlight; and I cannot visualize us staying in a hotel after this experience. If we had done so, we would have had a nice time, and yet missed so much and never known it. One caution is to ask for help to get there from the train station. We walked and wandered through the old town looking for the route thinking that we could find it on our own. We found it. But it was a heck of a hike pulling our suitcases up a steep hill over a path of randomly placed cobblestones. If it wasn’t 200 yards, it seemed like it. We could have taken the road, but that would have been further winding back and forth uphill, and we may never have found it. As we checked out, I asked the best way to the train station. The farm hand helping us volunteered to drive us in the van. I thought that was much better, but the two riding in the back of the van (which had no seats) were not much more fond of the ride than the hike. So, be mentally ready or get a cab.
