“a visit to the past”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 September 2012

Once the main building of the University of Bologna, the Archiginnasio now houses a library, which is not availabe to tourists, the Teatro Anatomico, reconstructed after the WW II with the dissection table in the middle (free admission) and a beautiful Sala dello Stabat Mater (admission is free as well). There are hundreds of coats of arms everywhere - of students and professors from the past. Finding coats of arms from your own country is a great fun.

“A very cool place to see”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 August 2012

My wife and I entered the Archiginnasio, just off the Piazza Maggiore, through the Cortile (the courtyard) and headed up the stairs. We were surrounded by hundreds upon hundreds upon hundreds of coats of arms of students at the University of Bologna from hundreds of years ago. Many unique and creative designs. On the second floor we walked down to the Stabat Mater room which was filled with heraldic designs hung around huge insignias. In this famous lecture hall, there were bookcases filled with thousands of ancient books from all of the sciences. Thereafter we walked down to the Teatro Anatomico and saw the most incredible room, wood from top to bottom, with benches rising up four flights, all focused on a single white table surrounded by a wooden railing where cadavers were dissected in the 1550s and 1600s. Huge statues of famous scientists, all carved from wood, were in niches high on the walls. The large carving of the anatomical man was impressive. From here we walked back up the stairs to the Biblioteca but could not enter because we only wanted to see it; only those actually interested in using the library were granted entrance. This was a very cool, very different place to see in the historic center of Bologna. Well worth a hour or two of your time.

“Unique collection of old books of science.”

Very in teresting to see those old books. Tip: look at the painted ceilings in the galleries and see the impression people had in medieval times of the world.

“Beautifully reconstructed building”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 July 2012

The Archiginnasio Palace was the first permanent location of the University of Bologna. We loved the restored building and especially the Anatomy theatre, where one can imagine rows of students watching the dissection of bodies. This is a bit grim, but struck a chord with my 11 year old son. The hall has been reconstructed after war damage. This building is near the centre of the city and can be a relatively short stop as part of the city tour. It is worth seeing.
