Avoid the touts (the place is infested with them) and go to the ticket office on the Viale Vaticano for your ticket. On 14 November 2018 at about 11.00am there was no queue so no need to book in advance. There is so much to see that it might be wise to check out what's there before you go and limit your viewing to 2 or 3 museums. In addition to the paintings and sculptures there are many religious and secular artifacts. Very impressed but would need several days to "do " it properly. The carriage/ car museum is recommended for a change from the high art.

This is an incredible experience with so much to take in. The history and beautiful building, painting, statues etc...
Make sure you pre book and skip the line.
The entrance is NOT near the church it’s outside and you need to walk around the wall. We had a evening tour which I would recommend.
Such an amazing place and you don’t need to religious to appreciate this incredible place.

The sights of the Vatican museum, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basillica had me in awe the entire time I walked through. My suggestion for touring would be to arrive early or pay to skip the line and go through on your own. We missed a lot having a guide, but it was a good way to say we went through it and got it over with. But if your one who wants to take there time, take my suggestion and skip the guide.

The Vatican requires guests that are in groups to use their whisperers...that DO NOT WORK WELL IF AT ALL. We had whisperers for our group on other tours that worked great. They made us use theirs. The place was packed shoulder to shoulder on the off season...I am going back in the summer and a bit worried about the crowds with the summer heat combo.

Time was an issue for us on our visit to the famous Vatican Museums. We only had a couple hours to look around before closing time. What we did see was FABULOUS!!!!

The famous Sistine Chapel was what we really wanted to see. WOW, it did not disappoint! We were awe-struck!! From the first step inside, the experience is simply beyond words indescribable!! Felt blessed, peaceful, amazed, plus so much more all at the same time!

So when in Rome, make sure to enter Vatican City and go to Musei Vaticani! An Absolute "Can't Miss" destination!

Very glad we took a City Wonders tour through the museum since there is a lot to see. Whether you take a tour or not, I highly recommend arriving early as we went in the off season and it was still very crowded by 10am.

We did a skip the lines tour through the Roman Guy. We still had to wait in line. There were tons of tours “skipping the line” which defeated the purpose! We did get in before being open to general public, which was nice. St Peters Basilica was everything you expect. Simply Amazing!! The Sistine Chapel...breathtaking!

Pictures or words can't really do justice in describing the Vatican museums and the Sistine Chapel.

The sheer amount of art, sculptures, tapestries, the work of masters like Michelangelo and Raphael, combined with the vast history that spans 2000+ years of human achievement and glory that is represented here - overwhelms with joy and amazement!

The Sistine Chapel itself is worth a visit to the museum - so surreal, you feel transported into a different dimension.

Do carefully plan which season you want to visit (peak seasons can be insanely crowded), which day of the week (weekdays are typically better), which time of the day (very early or late afternoon is better), and how you do it - with a good guide / tour (skip line tickets) - to get the most of your visit. If you come unprepared, you will get swallowed in the crowd, frustrated in the waiting lines and won't be able to do truly enjoy this place or even be able to see some of the famous works.

We did it with a very qualified tour guide and tour company and i highly recommend it - not only did we skip the insane lines, the guide was very helpful in navigating the key things and providing the history - whatever we could cover in the few hours we were there. Also we did October, weekday and afternoon - so the crowds were not bad at all. The guide (walks of italy) was amazing.

Tips (apart from prepare well and skip the lines):

* do bring some water - it's not easily available

* do not bring large umbrellas or backpacks if you can - they will get checked and you will have to come back all the way to the entrance to retrieve after the tour (its a long walk)

* come with a guide who can give you a lot of context, history and make sure you don't miss the main items - in the plethora of art here, it can be easy to overlook major things, and will likely give you a guide pamphlet to the art at Sistine Chapel

* do respect the rules of the Sistine Chapel and do not talk there (or take pics)

* best to use the restrooms as soon as you pass the security

* respect the sanctity of the place - dress conservatively - both men and women need to have shoulders and knees covered (no shorts, short skirts, sleeveless' or hats). They will turn you back if inappropriately dressed.

Awesome collection, a must to see when you visit Rome&Vatican.
Better is to not take a guided tour with 50€, if you go yourself you pay the entrance 17€ and probably an audio guide 8€. With the tour you wait 1 h also at entrance and take you very fast trough museum and Sistine Chapel.

Do not miss. It’s worth getting the early bird ticket to get into Sistine chapel before crowds arrive. It’s the most incredible art I have ever seen.
