“Great !!!!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 April 2012 via mobile

We booked (4 people), based on what we read on Tripadvisor. You get into the middle of nowhere, but the place is great. Paulo awaits you at the door and shows you the place and it's history. The interior of the restaurant is absolutely not dull. A lot to see on the walls. Food: great, great, great. Also the explanation of Paulo is amusing. He is always there, but not "pushy". Prices are moderate/acceptable for what you get in quality of food and the accompaning entertainment of Paulo. We loved it . Will certainly recommend The place to friends that will visit Rome.

“A "Must go to" when in Rome”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 April 2012

The restaurant is located at street number 87 on the Ancient Appian Way, known to the Romans as the Regina Viaurum. The facility is enviably immersed in the quiet and green Archaeological Park of the Ancient Appian Way, just a few minutes away from the historical city center of Rome. So already the trip to the restaurant is a trip into history!

Unchanged through the centuries, the restaurant's interior featuring Augustus' Freedmen Monument is an ideal setting for Banquets where savoring Roman and Mediterranean specialties goes hand in hand with inhaling History in a setting where history was made. The nearby Columbary was commissioned by Emperor Augustus as a sign of generosity and greatness for slaves who had earned their freedom. Here, the freed men prayed to their gods and buried their dead. The mausoleum was uncovered in 1726, stripped of its riches and turned into a wine cellar.

A lot has been written about the restaurant, the owner family Magnanimi and their amusing and entertaining stories about the historical location, the restaurant and its staff appearances in novels and the restaurant and food itself - and most of it is true. It is a real pleasure to see the entire complex, dine in what used to be sepulchral niches 2,000 years ago and to try original recipes from ancient Rome! Despite being a quite big restaurant the service is always friendly and authentic and the food is of good quality!

For us one of the places one has to visit during a stay in Rome - and it can be wonderfully combined with a trip to the historical sites around!

“Antica Roma - Great restaurant on Appian Way”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2012

It's hard to get a bad meal in Rome, and you'll definitely get a great meal at Antica Roma - and a lot more. The owner is the perfect restauranteur - offering advice and information (in good English, if you want), but he doesn't hover over you. Make sure you ask about the history of the reataurant, as about 2000 years ago (yes two THOUSAND!) part of the restaurant was used as a colombarium for the ashes of Augustus Caesar's freed slaves. It's also located on the old Appian Way (one of the most famous roads of history) heading out of Rome. Nothing quite like that in the U.S.! And again - perfect food, reasonably priced, excellent wait staff, and they won't point you to the most expensive wines. You will l not be disappointed with anything about this restaurant.

“Very Enjoyable”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2012

We really enjoyed our supper here. We had only arrived by plane that day and this was the best way to immerse ourselves straight into the atmosphere of being in Italy. Our host could not have been more friendly and helpful. He really made us enjoy our visit. I don't think it's cheap but it is worth every penny to make the most out of a weekend in Rome. Make the effort to go here.

“Serendipity”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 April 2012

We ate at Antica Roma at the recommendation of our tour guide we had for the Vatican tour. It was also rated high on trip advisor. All I can say is this was one of the greatest dining experiences we have ever had along with being entertaining and having great ambiance. Paulo , the chef and owner captivates you with stories of his culinary creations, history of the restaurant, and the site it is built on. We are going back tomorrow night. You must eat here if you are in Rome. Caio!
