“It's perfect”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 April 2012

If you want to visit Rome and prefer an uncomplicated and nice hotel, go to the Relais dei Papi. The location is absolutely perfect for visiting the Vatican (10 Minute walk away) and all other sights can be easily reached by metro or bus. The rooms are extremly clean, some even don't have carpets (allergies!). The staff is very kind and provides maps, extra information about city and sights and recommends restaurants that are worth visiting. Breakfast varies: sweet Italien styled things, but also eggs, ham, cheese, toast and marmelade, tea and cakes are available. We enjoyed our stay a lot!

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 March 2012

We stayed here four nights 17th Mar to 21st Mar 2012 the hotel from the outside is nothing special but looks are deceiving on this occasion, just a door on a back street but once inside the Hotel is pleasant, clean and tidy. Only a continental breakfast and no bar but we prefer to be out and about normally when on a City Break so no problem with that. The Staff were very friendly (in fact the only friendly people we met in Rome) as soon as we arrived the porter gave us excellent information and advice on the city and the people, with a free map he wrote all of the best places to explore, although great advice some of it was a real downer. He warned us that everyone would be out to fleece us, said be very careful of pick pockets and never sit outside a restaurant without know the prices first. This unfortunately left us with a bad taste and did not help our frame of mind as we felt on edge and suspicious of everyone all weekend. He also told us that the taxi trip from the main station should have been 15 euro and not the 40 euro we had to pay!

I have to say that apart from a visit to the Sistine Chapel and the Hotel we stayed at The Relais Dei Papi our trip was the worst city break ever. It was very clear that the Italians hate the British, very rude people especially when they knew you were British - we were ripped off at every opportunity with EXTORTIONATE charges for: -

Taxi 4 km trip 40 euro!!!
2/3 pint of beer 7 euro!
1 x tea+ 1x coffee+ 2 x pastries + 33 euro!!!

A work colleague of mine yesterday told me that he had similar experiences visiting Rome, Venice and Milan on a three City excursion, he was fleeced by everyone at one point with his pregnant wife he had a 2km taxi ride with luggage that the driver wanted 50 euro for!! - the taxi driver would not let them have their luggage until they paid!!

This is just my opinion but if you are considering Rome or even Italy THINK AGAIN!

Room Tip: we were in 412 which was a good room but the bed was a little uncomfortable - to be fair the porter...

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 February 2012

We have just returned from a three night stay, and this is a great hotel. However, we discovered that the hotel has been extended up to the 4th floor, and everything there is brand new. This is not mentioned on many websites, including this one, and the photographs shown are of the original hotel, with only six bedrooms. Our room was on the 3rd floor, in the old part, which of course we had booked anyway. Our shower was very very small, no good if you are a big bloke, and the toilet seemed to have been converted from an old bidet, with a seat that no-where near fitted in size. However, it was clean, with lots of hot water. The twin beds pushed together to make a double, were very comfortable, and we slept well. Very quiet, the fabric lined walls creating good sound-proofing. Location is brilliant. Get the hop on hop off bus from behined St Peter's Sq, the best way to see everything and very reasonable in price. Only a 10min walk back to the hotel. Lots of good trattoria's etc for eating, within easy walk, and great shops too. Try AI BALESTRARI on Piazza De'll Unita, (behined the hotel) for a really good typical Italian meal with the locals, at a great price. Overall, our stay at Relais dei Papi was very good. Yes, the croissants for brekkie are delicious, and all the staff are very friendly and extremely helpful. We would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: our room, although it had large opening windows, did not look out over anything other than an intern...
