“fine apartment, but a bit disappointed”

when i decided to rent an apt for a few nights for our stay in rome, i did a lot of research and put a lot of weight on the reviews that each apt received. so when i saw all the glowing reviews for this apartment, i was quite excited! it looked beautiful, was in a good location, and it seemed that everyone loved working with the owners. unfortunately, our experience was a little different.

1. the address that was given to me and the address that was given to our driver (by victor, who kindly arranged a driver to take us to the apt from the airport) were different. i gave the driver the address that i had, thinking there must have been an error if he was given something different. when we arrived, the address that i was given was the correct address as it matched the pictures, but emma wasn't there to meet us. i tried to call her but my phone had no network, so the driver was kind enough to call her on his phone. turns out she was just around the corner at the other address, so we went there instead. luckily this did not turn into a big issue, but i’m not sure what we would have done if we’d taken a regular taxi and/or if a different driver hadn’t been willing to call her on his phone for us, since we didn’t have wifi or phone service.

2. when we got into the apartment, i immediately knew it was not the apartment i'd rented. the layout was different and it didn't look as nice (no terracotta floors, no dark wooden ceiling, etc). the apt was fine and was very similar, but it simply wasn't the one i'd rented:
-it hadn't been recently remodeled
-it had no outdoor table/chairs to sit outside and relax
-it was on the 3rd floor rather than the 1st floor (the floors were all very tall, so it equated to about 4 flights of winding stairs, or we could use a very slow and very tiny elevator – literally could not comfortably fit more than 2 average-sized people in it)
-it required us to go through 3 locked doors every time we left or came back, instead of just 1 locked door with the apartment pictured in this listing. it doesn't sound like a big deal but it really was quite annoying having to use 3 different keys on 3 different doors every single time. (we found out after we checked-out that there were actually 2 buttons that you could push for the 2 exterior doors when you left the building, but emma hadn’t shown us that during check-in so we had no idea. according to my husband, emma looked at him like he was crazy when he went back upstairs to tell her that we couldn’t get out since she had the keys – how would we have known?! the first button wasn’t even near the first door, but up a few stairs and around the corner, next to the elevator!)

3. when it was time to check out, emma and our taxi (which she did kindly arrange for us) were both 25 minutes late. we were to check out at 8:00am, as we were scheduled to pick up a rental car at 8:30. i was getting nervous at 8:10 when she still wasn’t there, but we gave her the benefit of the doubt that she was just running a bit late. finally at 8:20 we started trying to reach her or victor, but as i stated previously, we could not make outgoing calls on our phones due to our network not being available. i was literally finishing a quick email to victor (since the apt does include free wifi) when emma arrived at 8:25. our check-out time was discussed with emma when we checked-in, so i’m not sure if she forgot and thought we were checking out at 8:30 or what, but she didn’t mention anything about being late when she arrived. luckily we didn’t have a flight to catch or anything like that, but a half-hour wait could be a huge problem if you have a tight schedule. we were late to pick up our rental car and ended up not getting the model we’d rented, so my husband was pretty mad about not getting the right car.

4. emma also tried to give us only 100 euros back for our security deposit instead of 150 – she stated “100, right?” to which my husband said “it was 150”. odd that she knew to ask us for 150 when we checked-in yet at check-out she suddenly didn’t remember the correct amount.

5. we did mention to emma at checkout that we had rented a different apt. we weren’t planning to mention it but since she was so late my husband did bring it up. her response was that she doesn’t arrange it so she doesn’t know anything about that. i was a bit surprised that she didn’t say she would at least bring it up to victor – but she seemed annoyed about being there in general so i’m not sure what was going on with her. i’m not sure if maybe we’re younger than their average renters (we’re both 28) so maybe she didn’t respect us/our check-out time, or thought we wouldn’t notice that we didn’t get the other 50 euros back…i just really don’t know since everyone else had such great experiences with her.

in general:
-victor was very quick to respond to all emails during the booking process, as well as closer to our trip when i had some additional questions
-the bedroom was very bright in the mornings as the window was in the bedroom in the apt we got; it seems to get bright outside much earlier in italy! by 6am each day the room was completely lit up, so some thicker curtains or blackout curtains would be nice since we didn’t want to wake up at 6am every day.
-the shower drained very slowly, so you stood in 1-2 inches of water during a quick 5-minute shower.
-the shower head would not stay up – it would constantly slide forward, spraying the back wall of the shower instead of spraying downward toward the floor. we did rig up the soap dish in a way that when the water was on the shower head would stay in a good spot, but once the water was turned off the whole thing would fall forward again and you’d have to fix it again the next morning.

overall, i would recommend the apt we stayed in to other travelers, but i would not have paid the same amount to stay in the apartment that we got rather than the one i actually rented. it was still a fine apartment and much better than staying in a cramped hotel room, but i would have felt much better about it if that was the apartment i’d actually chosen.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Victor and Emma are perfect hosts. As soon as we got off the train, Victor gave us directions to get to the apartment. When we arrived, Emma was waiting at the door to show us around and give us the keys. The apartment was clean and BEAUTIFUL. You couldn’t ask for a better location – we walked everywhere. When it was time to check out, Emma allowed us to store our bags in the building while we visited the city for a few more hours. Rome is amazing. We had a great weekend thanks to this apartment. Thank you Emma and Victor! I hope to see you again!
