The paintings on the ceiling and walls of this heavily ornarted church are definitely breathtaking. And the Jesuits are intelligent enough to think about placing a mirror so you don't get a sore neck after obseving the frescoes for long time. But the tomb of Saint Ignatius of Loyola is so over the top that has to be seen to believe. The lapislazuli columns and orb are simply amazing. A testament to the wealth and power of the order he founded and the Church he strived to keep dominating the world.

The outside of the first Jesuit church is plain, but the interior is covered with marble and gold. Art on the ceiling and walls have a 3D appearance because angel sculptures are imposed on the paintings.

I didn't even know this place existed until we walked past it. As a graduate of a Jesuit high school, seeing this remarkable church had deeper meaning, as it is the home of the Jesuit order. The ceiling is worth a visit all by itself. With so many churches in Rome, and with St. Peter's as a neighbor, it's tough to make a dent in a traveler's brain, but Gesu did.
