“Great value and great location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 May 2012

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Smeraldo for 5 nights in early March. The location was great; we were able to walk almost everywhere (only a 20 minute walk to Vatican City!) and there are numerous restaurants within walking distance. The staff were helpful and courteous. The breakfast was one of the the best we had during our 3 week trip to Italy - breads/pastries, meats, cheeses, juices, yogurt, cereal and great coffee! Although the hotel did not have free Wi-Fi, there was a computer in one of the common areas that we used. The room was clean and we had hot water, so no complaints there. All in all a very good value.

Dear Guest,
thank you for your lovely review about the Hotel!
I just want to let you know that our Hotel provides a free WiFi connection in the rooms and common areas: you only have to ask at the reception the code (that is for free!)... I am sorry that you didn't have the chance to use also this service.
Looking forward to see you here in Rome!
Sincerely

My family stayed at the hotel Smeraldo for 5 nights this last May. The location is perfect, close to all of the tourist attractions yet two minutes from the Campo di Fiori and the fabulous market there. The staff was pleasant enough and the place was quite clean and seemed well cared for. The breakfast was fine and always well presented. The elevator was my only real issue, the one time my daughter and I decided to use it, the lift stopped and we became trapped in between floors. The lift is the size of a very small closet, the staff had to manually lower the lift to the ground floor one meter at a time. It seems that the doors were jammed, It took around 20 minutes for the staff to get us out. We were happy to have fresh air and a very stiff drink! As with all good holidays we have a great story to tell. All in all we enjoyed our stay at Smeraldo and would probably stay there again.

The location is perfect, the rooms are clean and some of them quite nice, some of them with balconies -- and there is a nice roof garden with a fantastic view.

Two years ago my daughter and I stayed there in January and our only complaint was the lack of hot water in the shower in the morning. Brrrr!

This time I was there with the rest of my family in April and, yes, there was the same hot water problem. Is this only a problem on the 4th floor? Really, it was a very cold way to start the day. I tried the shower one evening, and it wasn’t much warmer.

If the hotel can fix this problem, I’ll be a regular customer.

We stayed in room 409 with our own private balcony. Wow! Yes, the room, bathroom and shower are all small! You are in Europe - get over it!! We loved the breakfast spread - it was fresh and lovely. The best part of our stay, though was to wake up with the smell of freshly baked bread of the bakery right across the street and almost underneath our balcony. Over-all, the staff is friendly and accommodating, but some of them might want to reconsider another job which will suit them more.

The location really is perfect and worth it!

The location, cleanliness, and price combination of this hotel outweigh the problems. I was very impressed with how clean the rooms felt. That said, the rooms felt more like staying in a hostel. Little decor, no frills. My boyfriend and I ended up in a triple so the room was quite spacious for two people. (Three would have been cramped in my opinion, especially if you had suitcases.) There was not much hot water which added to the hostel feel. It never got icy, but lukewarm was the best it got. Our toilet would also not flush on random occasions. We also could hear everything going on in the hall and assumed that everyone could hear most of what we said in our room and walking down the hallway.

Breakfast is included in the price which makes the price even more reasonable. The breakfast has good variety (meat, cheese, yogurt, breads, pastries, cake, cereal, coffee, tea, juice, water, milk but the pastries appeared to be and tasted like yesterday's leftovers and kinda stale).

My boyfriend and I met a group of friends in Rome and we all stayed here. It was good for that because there is a lobby where we could all meet and plenty of seating so we could wait for each other. There is a computer there too so we could check on restaurants or email while we waited. The rooms also have internet. You need to ask at the desk for the code. There were no breakfast tables for 6 so we couldn't all sit together which was a little disappointing. The location was great! We all were very happy to be able to walk everywhere we wanted to go. The location seriously could not be any better.

Also, if you take a taxi from the train station you should know that it should be around 10 euros. We paid more on our way there, not having any idea what Roman taxis charge. Bargain it down!
