So the good:
Nice new hotel and was very clean. Room was a basic room but very well decorated, bed was nice, bathroom and shower were very nice. Front end folks (especially the girls in red) were very helpful and nice and cleaning folks were awesome.....rose petals on the floor. Great amenities. Has a nice spa area. Air con was very nice.

Not so good: wifi was in and out, someone knocked on our door at 7am asking if we wanted a paper, location is near the Vatican but not sure about the neighborhood, the room we had had a view of the surounding neighborhood only, the room was mostly well insulated from noise but the front door was like a speaker...any noise in the hall we could hear very clearly and it kept us up. We took a look at the 36 euro/person breakfast buffet and thought we could spend our hundred bucks better elsewhere.....need a continental breakfast option.

Stayed here for 3 nights, booked a deluxe double but due to teething problems with the air con, we were upgraded to a much bigger room, with a bath and walk in closet!! This was done without hesitation and the staff (Johnny) were very apologetic.
The main sights were a short pleasent walk over the bridge, with St Peters and Castel St Angelo spitting distance.
Whilst we never used the gym/pool we made full use of the Yhi Spa facilities, which I have to say was fantastic, and after a hard day sight seeing it is necessary.
All of the staff were very helpfull, knowledgeable regarding Rome, and the actual hotel which was previously a monastery - this added to the fact that they were all really friendly, and seemed genuinely pleased to see you made for an excellent trip and stay.
The only reason why I wouldnt give it 5/5 is due to the prices of drinks and food in the hotel, however it is a 5* hotel so perhaps thats to be expected. Whilst on this point ive got to recommend Trattoria Sor'Eva which is literally around the corner, great value for money and the food is superb.

Room Tip: Pay the little extra to get a Premium room - the extra space makes a huge difference

Stayed there with my wife for our 25th wedding anniversary and the hotel it' s great and very very new but, probably because of that there is still something that have to be fixed as the wi fi that it was free but very week! The rooms where very clean but one morning they come to clean the room and we where still in the room and it was fine, unfortunately when we were back the room was not cleaned up, I mean that it was not a big deal but for the price we payed we expected a better service!!! Restaurant and drink were fine but very expensive, Wellness area was great and the staff was very friendly and welcoming! To resume we had a good stay at Gran Melia and we will probably stay there again next time in Rome hoping that these small things will be fixed and I' sure they will do that!

nicely situated with views of the city and within easy walking distance of the sights. Breakfast was good and the room, although not huge was comfortable. The staff were very helpful. The hotel had just opened and there were one or two minor teething problems but nothing too major,

We stayed at the the Grand Melia from April 20th, departed April 24th, we are a family of 4, the children are 17 & 10. From the time we arrived the staff were exceptional, going out of their way to be helpful and informative, special mention to Thiago-what a guy!. Coming from NZ this is a highly priced hotel but exceptional. We had 2 rooms, 1 double deluxe and 1 twin deluxe, both were lovely. The glass walled bathroom was a bit awkward with kids as one had to come down to our room whilst the other was showering, that is the only negative here-need to provide privacy in twin rooms as it may not always be couples sharing. The beds provided an excellent sleep ensuring we were all well rested for lots of walking the following day. Only 5 minutes walk to vatican city, a nice little resturant at bottom of hill. Breakfast was usual european breakfast, good supply of very fresh fruit, breads, pastries, cheeses. We had a cocktail most nights, beautifully presented-take the time to enjoy the ambience. Free wi-fi in rooms, iPod dock & nespresso coffee all good features. Felt the breakfast a bit over-priced but by joining Gran Melia loyalty club bought it down to 2 for the price of 1. Cocktails expensive but this is 5* and an amazing range of snacks come out as you enjoy your cocktail. This is a truly beautiful place to stay, we all hope one day to return. Only regret: we didn't have time to try out all the facilities such as the restaurants and spa but intend to next time. Thank you Gran Melia we look forward to our return.
