“How about some Air Conditioning?”
Reviewed 10 July 2012

This hotel is a pretty good deal but, as in many Italian hotels, THE AIR CONDITIONING IS AWFUL! I think they all have a governor on the A/C units that prevents them from going below about 75 degrees, which is awfully hot given the temperature and humidity of Rome. The thermostat says it goes to 18 degrees celsius (64 degrees farenhiet) but it is damn hot in this room!!!!!!

(They gave us a fan!)

Be sure to call before booking a room to make sure they promise the A/C is NOT GOVERNED.

Iceland sounds great right now!

Room Tip: Ask for really good air conditioning! If they have it.

Based on your review we’d like to take the time for a breakdown on how air conditioning can work in Italy, and more specifically at Hotel Artemide. As was noted in your review, this was not a singular incident that you felt hot in an Italian hotel room, which is correct as the air conditioning system is the same throughout the country-though we beg to differ if it is “awful.”

You were right, there is indeed a controller on how low the air conditioner can be set. This is not a choice of the hotel, though as you will see later, we are in full agreement with this decision. By Italian law public structures are not permitted to have air conditioning below 18 degrees Celsius. This law is based on Italy’s concordance with the Kyoto protocol, limiting green house gas emissions. This is a form of pollution that comes from many sources, amongst which air conditioning, leading to global warming-which is by now a scientific fact rather than a theory. According to this protocol, the countries signed up are responsible for lowering the amount of pollution they cause contributing to global warming. But we stress that as a nation and people Italy believes in this protocol, even if that may mean giving up some luxuries for the sake of preserving the atmosphere. Thus, no one’s air conditioning in Italy may be lower than 18 degrees as it uses much too much energy, causing more emissions. We are sorry if 18 degrees does not give you a sense of coolness, but that is our lowest option.

Our air conditioning is centralized, as it is in the majority of hotels throughout the world, not just Italy. The system models vary in services and functions, and we have made a conscious decision in our choice of air conditioning unit. Not only does our cooling system lower the temperature in the rooms to a standard of 20 degrees (with 2 degrees above or below controlled by the guest), but it also controls the humidity. This system is based on the scientific principle that a state of well-being is supported by combinations of temperature and humidity. The average person feels their best at 20 degrees Celsius, together with a humidity level of 40% making for the standard ideal comfort level. For this reason our rooms are kept at 20 degrees, with the dehumidifier keeping the rate at 40%. So, it is not only temperature, but also humidity is a factor in how you perceive your emotions and bodily functions. When in the hotel room for repose, these conditions are ideal. However, this is considering the standard person, not taking into account outside factors such as weight problems, health issues, insufficient hydration, if the window had been opened during the stay, rates of food or alcohol consumption, or if the AC unit was on while you were away from your room. But that is why there is a 2 degree variant controllable by the guest.

In fact, our experience with guests over the years has proved these scientific data as the majority of our guests find the room conditions ideal. There are even those on the opposite end of the spectrum asking for the air conditioning to be shut off completely. This is all personal preference. However, if one is accustomed to living in a country that does not adhere to the Kyoto protocol, it is possible that in the summer they can turn their AC down to 14 degrees. But while traveling, this custom may have to be put aside out of respect for the host country.
This summer Rome has reached the hottest conditions in the last 50 years. The average daily temperature is around 34 degrees Celsius and the humidity is climbing up to over 70%. So the outside conditions are tough for a day of sight-seeing. But when you return to the hotel, your rooms guarantees half of those conditions for your comfort and well-being. We have provided what we are able to, given the legal complications, even going above and beyond as you will not find that every hotel places the guests’ well-being among their priorities, but rather simply control temperature.

There is also the question of choosing the right period of the year to visit, based on personal needs. If someone suffers badly from the heat, this becomes complicated. Rome is warm and hot from the end of May till the middle of September, the hottest months being July and August. If one wishes to avoid such temperatures, better to book a visit when the weather starts to cool down. Though many come to “Sunny Italy” specifically for the heat it offers! So it is also a matter of personal planning.

Once more we are sorry that we were unable to meet your expectations for personal comfort. We did what we legally could. You got in touch with our reception desk and we were able to even send up a fan (a feature not many hotels offer), giving you the wind effect to spread out the cool air and lower your body temperature. Wind can make a hot day seem more bearable, though wind is not found naturally inside buildings. We are sorry that you did not appreciate this gesture.

We hope to see you once more when the weather is more to your taste and thank you for giving us this opportunity to explain our hotel’s air conditioning system.

The Artemide Hotel, Roma was just wonderful! The staff was courteous, friendly and so helpful from check in to check out, directions, suggestions, everything. The location is very convenient to most sights and if you walk you can visit all on foot. Our room was clean, comfortable and pleasant. The hotels provides a free access minibar in your room with water, juice and various "goodies", restocked daily at no charge. It's so nice when you get back and want some water not to pay 5 or more Euros! The breakfast is very nice and beyond adequate. Finally, on arrival you will find a complementary bottle of wine to enjoy as you unwind. We will return to the Artemide Hotel on our next Roma visit.

Room Tip: Be sure to inquire about your room size as some appeared small, but nice. A larger room is a better...

We spent two nights at the Artemide and it was wonderful. A quiet, well ventilated, decent sized room with a good sized bathroom (and a bath!). The windows opened and there was a screen and shutters and a black out curtain. Believe me coming back to a cool dark room after being out in 35+ each day was joyous.

The bed was comfortable and there was enough space for storage and a proper kettle for tea and coffee making. A free minibar with beer, softdrink, juice and water, restocked daily. The staff were lovely, kind and helpful. (such a change from 'service' in London!) Breakfast was amazing! Everything! Fruit, fruit and more fruit, salad, cold meats, cheeses, pastries, pancakes, breads, cereals, eggs, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, beans, juice, coffee, tea etc I have stayed in a number of hotels over the years (see previous reviews) and this breakfast was truly worth writing home about!

We were so exhausted and hot by day three we gave up on the idea of getting the train back to the airport and asked the desk if they could arrange a taxi, they said yes of course and advised they had a private driver who could take us for just a couple of euros more. We booked the driver and had an easy trip to the airport in airconditioned luxury.

My only negative would be the dinner we had at the rooftop restaurant, both my partner and I felt our meals were adequate and nothing special (for the price) which was a shame. However all in all I thought this was a great hotel and would definitely go back and I am very fussy!

Room Tip: I imagine they are all pretty good!

Was a nice room but small. We only had a view into the internal courtyard.

The staff were very friendly though and the one day that I had breakfast at the hotel it was quite good.

The hotel is very well positioned close to a lot of the cities sights.
