“close to the train station, but a little disappointing”
Reviewed 2 August 2012

The hotel is easy to find , but the area it is in is a little tatty. The rooms and breakfast were ok, but nothing special. The sights are all walkable, but there are more central locations. The cost of hotel rooms are expensive in Rome, but I did not feel it was worth what we paid. I would not stay here again unfortunately

Excellent service from all staff, nothing was too much trouble, the rooms were clean and comfortable, wi fi access, the meals were great and breakfast had everything you think off even gluton free was catered for. evenings in the bar for a late drink was friendly and you could get that late meal if you needed to. was made to feel welcome and was helped in what ever enquiry we had from taxi's to directions. metro outside of the door for easy access to where ever we wanted to go, would stay here again with pleasure and the prices were very good value for money. thank you for making our holiday a good experience.

Room Tip: all rooms have very comfortable bed and on-suites did not hear any noise very quiet.

We only had two nights in Rome before the next leg of our trip to Sorrento. Although this hotel was not in the very center of tourist attractions it suited our purpose. It was very clean. We shared a room with our eleven year old grand-daughter. She had her own little space with a curtain she could close for privacy. The breakfast was adequate. we were able to walk most everywhere to get a bus. I always felt safe even though friends who live in a Rome thought the area was not "Good". The only problem with the hotel would be for anyone in a wheel chair or has problems walking. There are stairs that can not be avoided. The elevators are a little strange. Would I recommend this hotel...Yes I would.......for families and couples a nice quite out of the way place....(Front desk people on the grumpy side)

My Husband & I stayed here for 4 nights as part of our 10 year anniversary celebration. From the moment we arrived until the time of our departure we were well looked after!

As one arrives at the Hotel Napoleon, you might feel a little disappointed going by the surrounding neighbourhood, however once you are inside the Hotel, you can see that it is a nice Hotel. It is an older Hotel (as per previous reviews) but this is part of the charm. From the moment we arrived, Franco the concierge welcomed us to the Hotel and Rome, in what we learned later to be the inimitable style of Franco, he made us feel like VIPs.

Our room was 411 and it was a nice room, very clean with a nice sized bathroom. Our room had a slight negative 'location wise', due to the fact that it was located beside the ‘cleaning cupboard’ so on a couple of occasions early in the morning, we could hear "Housekeeping" get items out of the cupboard. The sound proofing is not ideal due to the fact that it is obviously an older Hotel; when we were in the bathroom, we could hear the man next door to us snoring but once the door was closed we couldn’t hear a thing! So it was good to have a room in between us. I would imagine if he was on the side of the cleaning cupboard we would have heard him, so in hyancith perhaps the cleaning cupboard was the lesser of the 2 evils. :) However, overall we were happy because it was quiet during the night whilst sleeping, which is the main thing

We paid EUR20 extra to have Tea & Coffee facilities however we never used it, we attempted to make one cup of tea but did not end up drinking it. Therefore on reflection, we would not incur any extra costs like this again, particularly as one drinks so much espresso whilst out and about that we had enough by the time we got home in the evening. (Lesson learned).

Franco the concierge, offered us champagne to celebrate our 10 year anniversary but as we don’t drink alcohol he suggested that we could get ‘ice cream with fruit’ instead but as we were never around during the day, we ended up just having ‘tonic water’ from the bar one evening, which we enjoyed and we really appreciated the gesture, made us feel special.

We did not eat in the restaurant as we wanted to go out and try local restaurants instead. However, we did partake in breakfast daily and we found it to be ample with plenty of choice, we were well fed every morning. Obviously some of the produce is somewhat different to back home, but that’s part of the ‘experience’. It was also great to be able to order cappuccinos because the coffee was awful, as it was surprisingly extremely weak. Overall we thought they did a great job at breakfast!

(Note: There is a lovely restaurant around the corner of the Hotel called ‘Trattoria Antica Hostaria da Angelino’, its literally 5 minutes away, I think it was the side of the hotel, as you come out go to the right. See my review and its approximate location in the restaurant section.)

The location of the Hotel was good because it was beside a metro stop. The metro people went on strike twice whilst we were there but thankfully on both occasions it didn’t disrupt us too much. There is also a No. 64 bus that you can take which Franco will outline on his map with his little coloured highlighter. :) The district itself seems to be less affluent than other districts and can appear somewhat dodgy but just as in other cities, we just made sure that we were alert at all times and did not walk around there too late. In hyacinth after all the walking, when taking the metro, we would have liked to have avoided always having to go back to Termini station (main station) and perhaps to have been located on a different train line, so that we didn’t have to get off at termini to continue on to the desired location. However, that’s just a personal thing and the trains do come quite regularly. Tip: Buy a Roma Pass for 3 days, it allows you to use the public transport and to access places like the Colosseum and the Forum plus 2 museums; therefore you can avoid all the queues and feel like a VIP in the process! My husband read about it and we were so glad that we bought them; they are available from the concierge.

There is a comfortable lounge area in the Hotel and it’s nice to be able to sit there after a long day walking around the streets of Rome. We enjoyed sitting there having a refreshing tonic water whilst reading the free English newspapers or even just to connect to the internet via the WiFi. The area never seemed to be frequented too much whilst we were there, so it was particularly quiet, which we enjoyed.

We left early on Monday morning and Fabio the concierge booked a local taxi for us. A word of warning – try to arrange in advance a Taxi or mode of transport with a set price! Our journey to the Ciampino airport turned into a nightmare. The Ciampino airport is the nearest one, being about 16kms away and it should cost a MAXIMUM of EUR35. However, 1 Hour 15 minutes later, it was a disaster, instead of being early we had only 30 minutes to spare to get to the departure gates because the taxi driver decided to take us to the wrong airport!! Instead of driving us directly to Ciampino as requested, he took us on a tour of the airports and brought us to Fiumincio Airport first and then to Ciampino. Even though he was told by the concierge that it was Ciampino and also by my husband as we got into the taxi initially and then two more times during the journey when we realized what was happening. He seemed annoyed when we tried to tell him twice that we were supposed to be going to the Ciampino airport and it sounded like he said ‘stop distracting me’. As you can imagine, due to the language barrier it was extremely frustrating. At one point I felt like ringing the Hotel to speak to the driver! At the end of the journey the meter was showing up around EUR91, needelss to say, we had no intentions of paying the full fare. My Husband generously paid EUR50! We were so stressed and just glad that we finally arrived at our destination. In my view it was too much and if I could have spoken Italian I would’ve discussed the rate with him. Bearing in mind, that our destination was the closest airport and that it should have only been a maximum of EUR35 to ciampino, however because of the language barrier and the fact that the departure gates could be closed, we just gave the money and ran into the airport. It was such a stressful journey, we didn’t even get time to enjoy an espresso or do some gift shopping. So please, don’t be caught out like us!! Book a reputable firm yourself and enjoy a stress free journey to the airport!

Naturally we do not blame the Hotel for this incident but feel it is something that should be shared with other ‘tripadvisor members’. We did email the Hotel (Concierge and the Director) firstly to thank them for looking after us and then just to notify them of what happened in relation to the driver and we provided all the relevant particulars. We felt that if it was a regularly used taxi company, they could advise the company and in particular avoid the “services” of this driver. The Director replied to our email and sympathized with us and explained that some Taxi drivers can be scallywags. He concluded that he hoped it did not tarnish our memory of Rome and offered us a free transfer from the airport when we return again, which was a nice touch.

In conclusion, we absolutely loved Rome and thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this Hotel! We were impressed by the level of service and professionalism at Hotel Napoleon. We would have no hesitation in recommending Hotel Napoleon; it is a lovely hotel with lovely staff that ensures you have a 4 star experience.
