“Avoid At All Costs (or it'll cost you)”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 November 2011

My partner and I reserved a holiday rental flat through RetRome, paying a deposit a month in advance of our arrival. The only thing that actually went to plan was that a driver picked us up at the airport.

When he dropped us off at the flat, we phoned the number we were instructed to phone, only to be told that someone else was occupying the flat. We waited for 3 hours while RetRome "tried to find us" alternate accomodations. They phoned back to say that they had discovered a landlord with a place next door to the flat we were supposed to have rented who could show us a flat there that was available.

As it turned out, the second flat promised was inaccessible due to the fact that they didn't have the keys. They instead showed us a third flat that was being used for storage, but which they would let us stay in. The bed looked like it had been slept in, the toilet was soiled, and there were bags and boxes filling the sitting room. Needless to say, we declined this offer.

RetRome got us a room at a B&B near their own Veneto B&B, saying they were full for the night, but promising to admit us the next day. The B&B we stayed at the first night was clean and ok, but noisy, and certainly not to the standard of the flat we had booked.

When we viewed the Veneto B&B, the attendant who runs the place was in the process of cleaning the room, but the room was very run down, the wall paper and chairs heavily soiled,

In their defence, RetRome did offer to allow us to stay here for free. So it should speak volumes that we opted to find other accommodations.

Moti, the manager we were dealing with on the phone indicated that a full refund had been processed, and apologised that they weren't able to find something to our liking. In additional taxis (a taxi from the flat we rented to RetRome Veneto €35, another from there to the hotel we ended up staying at €25, plus more than €20 in roaming significantly drove up our cost, but we were told they couldn't accomodate any such claim, and that they had done all they could.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that RetRome ruined our holiday, but we lost 1/4 days in Rome dealing with finding a place to stay. It was also stressful, and we ended up spending more on housing than we should have. Add to that that it took an escalation through PayPal to get them to refund the deposit, and the conclusion you might come to is that these guys are at best unprofessional, and at worst they're frauds.

Totally unacceptable.

It was an unpleasant surprise when we arrived. The room was in terrible condition.
It seemed like it wasn`t ever reconstructed. The pictures on website were completely different from what our room looked like. The beds were in bad condition, we slept like in bath. The bathroom was the worst.

To be fair the location was amazing. We were closed to Spanish steps and most of the day we were wondering the streets.
For breakfast you get voucher for one croissant and coffee or tea.
