“Encapsulates the feeling of Rome”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 May 2012

I stayed at Hotel Locarno my very first night in Rome. From the moment I pulled up, I loved everything about the hotel. It's art deco charm and character were exactly what I was looking for, from the lobby to the old fashioned elevator to the gorgeous roof top garden. This is the perfect hotel if you're looking for "real" Rome and old world charm. It's unique and full of character. My single room had a tiny little bed, an adequate bathroom and a large window with wooden shutters I could throw open to breathe in the Roman air. It was noisy during the day, so perhaps not the best choice if you're a napper or looking to sleep in, but who wants to waste time in Rome sleeping? The included breakfast was fantastic. The location was ideal. I was easily able to explore the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and Coloseum all on foot. Book directly with the hotel online; you'll get the best deal. I'd definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Be sure to request non smoking when booking. Don't miss the rooftop garden!

It was our second visit to this hotel. The first time I stayed here I was so 'in ore' of this amazing city and delighted about the hotel's good location and the fact that it was so individual and stylish that I didn't pay too much attention to the small detail.
I love, love, love the overall design of the hotel, that's why I wanted to return. As you step inside it's like walking into 1940's Rome, with lots of wonderful Art Nouveau and Art Deco features. It has a Belle Epoque birdcage lift and the outside windows are designed in a beautiful Art Nouveau style. There is a lovely courtyard where you can have breakfast or just hang out, and in the evening it becomes a very popular place to meet and have drinks. The reception staff were lovely and as we checked in they upgraded our room, which was a nice surprise. However, the staff in the breakfast area and bar were not so friendly! We stayed in room 602 and although it was a nice size it was very dark and gloomy and although I like having antiques in my room and don't mind the odd creek here and there, I prefer my bedding to be modern, but everything seemed a bit dirty. The bed was very hard and the net curtains grey instead of being white and the bed spreads seemed antique, which made you wonder when they were last cleaned! The bathroom flooded every time you took a shower and I don't mean just a puddle, I mean the floor was absolutely soaked ! The breakfast and bar area, although very 1940's, just seemed a bit grubby, the mirror really needed a polish the windows weren't very clear and the carpets looked dirty. Breakfast wasn't great, the best part was the croissants, however it was nice that they serve breakfast until 11.00! I hate to be negative about this hotel, as it is such a beautiful building and someone has put a lot of love and effort into making it so stylish. It's location is also good and just around the corner from Piazza del Popolo. However, more attention needs to be paid to detail and cleanliness.

Room Tip: Our room (602) overlooked the courtyard which made it noisy at night.

On our arrival at Locarno with my wife we were greeted by two lovely members of staff at the reception. We'd had a few complications with our booking made by Hotels.com. This was resolved without even asking. Excellent!!
Every member of staff made our stay so good even though we spent so little time in our room or hotel because we spent so much time walking round this lovely city.
Our room was small (tiny shower!) but adequate, the bar area was a gem of a place and a nice place to relax. Breakfast was typically Italian and nice (with a bottle of Prosecco to help yoursef to!).
Situated close to Piazza del Popolo it was within easy reach to start your walking to the many sights in Rome.

We've stayed at Locarno during Easter and we had a great time. The atmosphere was splendid. When you just enter the hotel and have a moment to relax at the patio, you immediately feel the Roman vibe. We also liked the gentlemen at the reception desk, very helpful and funny.
Locarno is a great hotel to explote Rome, we've walked everything and to give an idea, the Spanish steps is only a few minutes walk.
Tip 1: take the limousine service back to the airport (same rate as the reg. taxi's; ask the reception)
Tip 2: start your day walking at the nearby Borghese park
Tip 3: don't plan to much during the day, go with the Roman flow
