What an amazing experience. History and art all rolled into one. The explanations of the facility and how it has been used, exploited over history is very well done.

However, access for wheelchairs is rough. Yes, there is an elevator, but the floors are in bad shape.

The colosseum itself is, of course, a stunning and awe inspiring piece of ancient history and was every bit as impressive as I was hoping it would be. The shine was well and truly taken off the experience as a whole, however, by the fact that the organisation of the thousands of people trying to get in can only be described as a chaotic shambles.

After queueing for over an hour to get tickets we were told to join the middle queue. On getting to the end of the MASSIVE queues we discover there are only actually 2 queues. We ask several others which is the middle queue and everybody else was as confused as us. We join one and queue for another hour, only to finally reach the front and be told by a very rude official that we are in the wrong queue and was having none of our complaints. So it was all the way to the back of the other queue and it was around another 1.5 hours before we got in. If it wasnt for the fact we'd already paid we would have left. There were people kicking off and arguing with staff all over the place. Such a shame.

We booked tickets but we couldn’t go inside,, the line was without end,, terrible..
We tried next day.. again the same..
Why they sell two more tickets can’t understand..
Someone said that waited more than 1hour to go inside
We went finally 1 hour before closed, and we get in..
Just a tip, don’t use the toilets.. even not wash hands.. dirty as hell

To avoid the long line for tickets visit The Forum in the morning and buy a joint access ticket for the Forum and The Colosseum. Guests can also book a tour of the Colosseum and gain access to the underground area and a top viewing tier. I am not sure of the price of that though. Expect crowds inside and out, but it is worth it. Beware of all the ticket touts and vendors outside selling tourist tat, just ignore them even if they tell you that you MUST book tours, they are telling lies. Avoid getting into conversation with them.

One can't come to Rome without seeing the Colosseum in its amazing splendor after so many centuries. The way to do it is to book a tour that allows you to Skip the line to avoid the at least hour long line to get in, and also gives you special access to a platform where you can take some nice pictures. It's also more meaningful to have a guide explain, since the place wouldn't really come alive without that.
