Owner description: Perhaps the best-preserved of the monuments of ancient Rome, this huge marble structure was built to hold more than 50,000 spectators to witness bloody contests of might and the slaughter of wild beasts.

What an awesome sight, a magnificent tribute to mans construction ability. But the place has a sombre feel about it, knowing that so many people where killed here and that 1000's came to cheer on the murder, creates such atmosphere. We visited during the day to see the inside which is partly rebuilt and at night to get the most eerie yet mystifying night photo's. The Hop on Hop off bus is great as you can stop off here at numerous times throughout the day.

...but enter the Colosseo is always exciting if not even thrilling!
Your childrens (mouth opened) will love to see it too!
Buy tickets online and you'll avoid the queue at the entrance.
Do you know that this year (2012) Roma celebrate its 2765 anniversary?!!! That's massive!

To avoid at all costs, in my opinion, the coarseness presence of the Centurioni (outside, a picture for $$); a tolerated presence difficult to understand.
Want a souvenir? Look the inside shops firsts, price are reasonable and books (also for children) are available in a lot of languages.

Generally speaking too much to see in Roma, tours' plans must be done attentively according to your preferences in advance. At least some historical/architectural info on what you'll like to visit and see will allow a better comprehension of the monuments, become familiar with the italian names you want to visit will help too, Internet will help a lot in that (for tickets and private tour too).

Did a self guided tour through the colosseum. I am a history buff, so I knew enough history to make this interesting on my own. If you don't that much about its history I think I would be a good idea to to a guided tour.

When you first see the Colosseum its breathtaking, how on one side of the road is a moden metro station and opposite is this magnificent ancient ruin. When its lit up at night, its truly fantastic.

We booked in advance which paid off, as the queue was massive.

It's the colosseum, what more can I say? So awesome and we had a great guide the was privately hired. Steep stairs though, but handicap accessible.
