After reading the reviews we decided to come here with an open mind. Most of the negative comments have been about it needing an upgrade and stuck in the 60’s , however, we were pleasantly surprised and found it quirky.
The hotel is spotless including its pool, it’s many terraces and our room. Speaking of which was a standard room, very spacious, good air conditioning and a terrace with fabulous views. If you want to nit pick the shower is poorly positioned over the bath, no extractor in bathroom and balcony furniture has seen better days. WiFi is hit and miss but good 4G signal.
Staff are extremely helpful and friendly. No cash, everything is billed to your room which you sign for at each order.
Breakfast is continental but also has hot food. The coffee is really good and plentiful, no dress code. Can’t comment on evening dining.
Plenty of sun loungers and seating on the terraces and indoors.
All in all a delightful stay.
If you don’t have mobility issues Pogerola is a 10 minute walk uphill to a few decent restaurants with more great views.
Amalfi is a 40 minute walk down approx 750 steep steps, my legs have hurt for 3 days but it’s doable (I’m an average middle aged and overweight female and wouldn’t do it again as there is a free shuttle bus to Amalfi regularly, but I did it, go me!!!!!)
I really love the style of this hotel and felt I should be wearing a 60’s bathing suit, Jackie O style ( bathing cap no longer necessary)
A varied age range staying here and we’d come again.

We arrived late after a hair-raising hour and a half transfer ride. We survived but looked much older than when we left home. All the staff where very welcoming and helpful. The standard room we had booked was dated but very clean. Large patio with fantastic views. The patio chairs are not that comfortable which was a shame. We love our tea and coffee; sadly there are no facilities in room. Bathroom is old, however the shower worked very well. There is a hoover on the wall to dry your hair, but this obviously was not working well as many ladies were seen at dinner with wet hair. The pool has been updated and is superb and very attractive with good sunbeds. Needed a few more brollies. Hotel shuttle is excellent to the private beach and Amalfi town. Everything on the beach is excellent which includes sunbeds, food, and toilets. It cost 10euros each for the beds. Breakfast was good buffet. Nice welcome. Evening meal is not buffet, has limited choice and quite frankly not appealing. Soup was like glue. One evening we needed a hacksaw for our steak, whereas another day was good. Only one choice of sweet. Hey we are in Italy with fantastic ice-cream, Excelsior where is this, more fruit please! All waiters where good apart from one man who was more like Basil Fawlty in his manner!. All staff where great. We did the 800 steps down and we are both 60, going up we needed to go back a few years. Took us 20 minutes down and really nice. I regard this hotel as a three star with certain areas almost creeping into a four star. What sells this are the views. I took binoculars as I love the boats. The yellow carpet in the room corridors where heavily stained and took your breath away. I was surprised. Excelsior get these replaced! The bar, pool, restaurant and lobby is all good and very clean. All in all it was a good holiday.

I have holidayed here five times, once 25 years ago and four times over the last six years. The appeal off the hotel has been its quaintness, it’s slighly warn shabby 60s look, it’s sort of basic but in a luxurious way, their is nothing laid on, guest have to make there own activities.

They owners have suddenly invested a lot of money in the place

The bar has been replaced, but still has no atmosphere

On this visit I find that the have turned the swimming pool into a large paddling pool with shallow sides where couples now lay and grope each other in front of everyone.

A very high proportion of the staff have changed, there is now an obsession to the point of rudeness with getting your signature for anything you have in the hotel, often before you’ve had it, its like they don’t trust you.

We have always been here half board, now an expensive al la cart menu is offered to other guests who are treated with an obvious priority, our service was very slow and we were made to feel second class, you cannot upgrade to the other menu for a premium, you have to pay from scratch.

From our research Tui are not offering half board next year, this will nearly double the price of a holiday here, the feeling amongst guests is the UK visitors are no longer a target market.

We love the Amalfi Coast but think we will be finding a different hotel.

Had a wonderful family holiday with my husband and 17 year old Daughter. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We booked half board, breakfast was good with amazing views on terrace. Evening dining was again enjoying the view. Food was good quality but only 3 choices of meals, having a teenage daughter she enjoyed pasta starters but it would have been good if we could have ordered pizza or lasagna for her. Water with meal is not complementary.
This hotel would not be suitable for the very elderly or young children. Lots of steps going to each level and lift very small. The rooms were clean, large with exceptional views. The furniture in rooms were VERY dated, however we quite liked it after the initial shock. There are no coffee making facilities in room but there is a fridge. NB we were warned not to put own shop bought stuff in fridge as they will charge you.
The position of the hotel is high above Amalfi, which is good as the main road is very noisy the closer you get to Amalfi.
Beers charge about 6 euro each but if you walk down hill 5 minutes there is a small supermarket where same bottle is about 2 euros. The supermarket also do fresh bread if you want a sandwich to take to beach, which is a good option if you are on a budget.
Hotel provided free mini bus to Amalfi and there is a bus stop outside for the public Sita buses. Tickets can be bought at the hotel very cheaply. NB if you are being picked up early in Amalfi for excursion check bus times yourself as TUI rep gave wrong time.
Overall this was a great holiday and we will be going back.

One of the most beautiful hotels i ever visited..spacious and clean room with a sea and mountain view..its heaven on earth..the lunch and breakfast restaurants was amazing..the hotel have a private and free shuttle to the town and to the private beach also! Do not book a room on the underground levels there is a lot of insects and u cannot enjoy the beautiful view of the sea..If u are searching for an unforgettable stay u have to choose this hotel !
