Popped in after dinner for a post-prandial glass of white wine. We were absolutely stunned. This place is a visual feast. Buried underground in former cisterns. Beautifully conceived by a Belgian architect and tastefully done out with green furniture and features. They have a fabulous selection of wines that you can drink in or outside. But inside is a must: the seating areas are reminiscent of roman amphitheatres. Service is excellent and the staff all too willing to explain the history. Not to be missed!

Don’t overlook this place just because it’s called Enoteca. Specially selected wines from boutique wineries from every area of ITALY are complemented by local produce and friendly personal service from Alberto. The award winning subterranean design and decor expertly explained by Gian Paolo makes this place unique. An unexpected find in Matera, which would not be out of place in cities such as New York, London or SYDNEY. A must visit experience.

This is a fascinating and hugely charismatic bar/restaurant on the edge of the sassi caveoso.

While not prominently signposted from the road (it’s on the main Bruno Barrio road), you must go in.

There’s outdoor seating, but this is a place that’s unique for its underground layout. There are 4/5 separate cave seating areas on different levels, all immaculately presented. It’s clear that a lot of effort has been put into turning these ancient caves (including a couple of old cisterns) into a stunning bar - and it shows.

The manager/waiters were all passionate about the place and were very knowledgeable about the superb range of Italian wines (from around Italy).

The food is primarily boards of local breads, meat and cheses, together with ciccheti, analgous to tapas albeit from the Veneto region (the chef hails from there). All is of the highest quality.

Very much a must-visit for anyone in Matera: excellent wine and food in a unique underground location; what’s not to like?!

The enoteca is located in a cave with various levels and "rooms" along with the wine cellar. We spent the evening tasting six wines as well and having cicchetti. We started with prosecco and progressed to white, rose and red. The wines were good quality and each wine was explained. Dishes were very tasty. It's worth a visit even if you are not a wine drinker just to be in a beautiful cave.
