We were staying nearby and the family were having a siesta at the hotel. I wanted to visit some old sherry bars and this fell pretty high on everyone's list. Wary of the reviews advising of grumpy bartenders I ventured in.

I had a great hour!

I tried 3 or 4 fantastic sherries, each accompanied by some great nibbles. The gent keeping the bar that day could not have been more friendly, chatting to customers and recommending what to try.

Would definitely return whenever next in Madrid.

I only started drinking 'proper' sherry about 2 years ago, with Manzanillla being my firm favourite. I had heard about this place even before that and thought it sounded interesting, but now as a sherry lover, and despite only spending one day in Madrid as a stop off, this was high on my places to visit. Lets get one thing straight, if you do not like sherry, dusty old shelves, old world charm and no nonsense service, then this probably is not the place for you. There are plenty of modern bars selling cocktails, fancy wines and exciting food, but this is NOT one of them. It is also not somewhere to go for a meal as tapas is all there is, and only a small selection at that.

Now, if you love sherry, or are open to giving it a fair chance, and want to drink it in unpretentious surroundings, with a small, but perfectly suited selection of tapas, then you really do have to check this place out. So you cant take photos, leave a tip or stroke the cat....so what!! If updating your facebook status with a photo is priority for you, best stay away. I for one can not wait to go back, and have already recommended it to anyone who will listen. This place is what it is, so please do not complain if after reading the reviews you still go, and expect it to be something it isn't

This is a tapas bar that specializes in sherry. Looked like they have very wide variety of sherry. Ordered smoked tuna and a couple of glasses of sherry. Nice atmosphere. Felt like I was inside an old cask. They speak no English so you must know what to order.

Five sherries to sample, not surprising I found the middle one Palo Cortada the most pleasing, though this meant trying the others first. The Fina was too light, the Oloroso too dark, no I don't have goldilocks but the proprietor is a bit of a bear when it comes to people taking photographs within his establishment. "No camera" signs were prominent and I'd love to have taken a photo of one as they seem quite comic. Tapas are provided and Señor Bear keeps your tab in white chalk on the dark wood of the bar. Respectate Señor.
