“Poor plumbing, stale breakfast, mixed service”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 July 2012

The location is great and some of the staff tried to be very helpful. Overall though this was the one "dud" of our trip. Issues began the first night we arrived when we were told the double bed we'd requested (and been told was available) wasn't actually available. They told us they'd take care of it the next day though, so we didn't mind too much. Then the sink plug in the bathroom got stuck so the sink wouldn't drain, and no one working that evening knew how to fix it. So we got to wash our hands, brush our teeth, etc., in the shower -- you never appreciate how helpful a sink is until you don't have one.

The breakfast looked very good the next morning, but wasn't. Eggs were cold, pastries appeared to be pre-packaged, dry, and sickly sweet -- very different from what we were used to with spanish baked goods. The hot water for tea was luke warm at best. They played loud pop music incessantly, though I can't complain much since I never asked them to turn it off. We stayed four nights and were dreading breakfast by the third morning.

The bed situation was "resolved" the next day by them pushing our two single beds together. In my initial contact email I had specifically asked not to have this, so I was a bit surprised. The gentleman at the front desk who I spoke to told me that this was the only solution as they didn't have any other rooms in our size with a double bed. He didn't seem to understand that the fact that they had promised me something different was a problem. He also pointed out that we couldn't tell the difference, which I found somewhat insulting since obviously we did feel the difference, falling into the crack between the two beds. He did not offer any discount or other compensation.

One final note: the hotel owners seem to have an almost neurotic need to put their hotel logo on *everything* in the hotel... the shower door, towels, toiletries, hairdrier... you name it.

The hotel has some character and a great location, but I would not return.

The breakfast is worth it's own review. Terrific times 2. Nice clean spacious room- we had a junior suite. Cool design, good location, a little loud when the bars clear out, but that means you're in a city. Good place.

The hotel is in a great location in central madrid and close to the palace. Free buffet style breakfast although there is not a lot on offer and it is basic.
The only problem I had with the hotel was on the first night reception had no activated my air conditioning. So for the first night I had a terrible nights sleep as I was feeling too hot. In the morning this was rectified.

My husband and I have just returned from a six night stay at the Meninas. We found it very good value for money for a capital city and were particularly impressed by the friendliness and helpfulness of the reception staff. In so many hotels this service is impersonal, but not at the Meninas. The location is excellent being in a quiet street close to the Opera House and Castle. Our room was good and well equipped with a very comfortable bed and pillows, so often lacking in more expensive hotels. The building is old and quirky and such a change from many of the more soulless 4* hotels.

I would certainly recommend this hotel to visitors to Madrid and would stay here again if we returned to Madrid.

Madrid is an interesting town where all the key sights seemed clustered around each other one moment and spread out the next. The Meninas is between two metro stops; it is about 200 meters from the opera house; and it is 2-3 blocks from the palace. I am sure there are other hotels that are as nicely situated, but it hard to think of one that is better situated.

On top of the location, the room was a deal, and the hotel was clean, modern, and it felt like it had been newly remodeled. The staff was great. They accommodated us when we arrived unexpectedly late, they helped us make some reservations at local restaurants, and they held our bags when we left for an overnight stay in Sevilla. They even offered a free breakfast with our room.

The room itself was on a courtyard in the interior of building. Everything was painted a light shade of gray. Given the limited light from the interior courtyard, this made the room a little dark and uninviting, but in the grand scheme of things, it was a small detail in otherwise fine hotel.

I would definitely stay here again.
