Went on Friday at 2:30pm and there was no one in line to buy tickets or go in. We did both in 5-10 minutes. The information desk showed us where all the key artworks were located and we were able to go through all of those rooms in about two hours. We didn’t sit and contemplate the paintings but also didn’t feel hurried. Really enjoyed the museum. My personal favorites were the Reuben and Greco paintings.

I bought tickets online and it’s worth it. The ticket is for a day pass so you don’t have to arrive at any particular time. Children under 18 are free but they still need a free entry ticket so be mindful of that when buying online.

The exhibits are well organized and the plan has the masters all laid out by room so you can skip to those if you want.

Worth a visit during the free time of 6pm-8pm otherwise you pay €15 a ticket which, coming from London where museums/art gallery's are free, seems a little steep to me. Some nice pieces on show here and excellent for a rare rainy day in Madrid, great tapas bars around it too.

I had an absolute delight searching through the collection here at del Prado. A life long goal, to see the outstandingly well preserved collections.

The museum has a very good web site that helps with planning the visit. I get saturated after a few hours, and have a hard time appreciating what I am seeing, so I need to do a bit of planning in advance. With that in mind, I could spend time seeing selected works of Goya, Reubens, Bosch, and a few other artists I've wanted to study up close. That is a place where you could probably spend months, so planning is a good thing.
