I was attracted by the things I had heard about Girona: The most highly rated restaurant in the world is located in Girona; much of "Game of Thrones" was shot in Girona because of it's well preserved streets and buildings; there is an ancient wall around the old city that you can actually walk on; serious cyclists flock to this area for the beautiful scenery and good climate; reputed to have the best preserved Jewish quarter in Europe; it's only 40 minutes by train from Barcelona, and the list goes on and on.
We wanted to stay in the historic area, so Hotel Museu Llegendes de Girona was a good choice - an easy walk to all the places we wanted to see. We took the Viator "Game of Thrones" tour with Susanne and it was absolutely amazing. She brought along an iPad and showed us the actual scenes from the television series as we stood on the spot where it had been shot.
Though we didn't eat in the world's number 1 rated restaurant (make your reservations well in advance if you want to go there), we had some excellent meals at Drap (near the Jewish Quarter) and L'Aqueria - both of which were excellent.
The hotel staff was helpful and kind. We had some issues with the elevator not stopping at our floor, but it was never actually stuck. We were told the repair person was scheduled for the next day, so the hotel is clearly in touch with keeping the property in good repair.
The hotel is filled with fascinating antiques, which we enjoyed studying.
The amenities in the room are excellent. They even have a robe and slippers, a nice touch not often seen in reasonably priced hotels these days.
There is a breakfast buffet that's a bit on the pricey side for what you get, but there aren't cafes close by the hotel, so if you really want breakfast and not just a croissant from the bakery, it's fine.
The staff in the hotel and the local people were so helpful to us - once when we got lost a kind woman with two young children went out of her way to walk us all the way back to the hotel! There is a sense of peace here that was most welcome, especially after the bustling cities of Paris and Barcelona.
The street the hotel is located on is extremely narrow. If you are planning on driving, make sure you've made plans on where to park.
Girona is a city we would definitely return to, and we are very appreciative of the professional and kind response we got from everyone at the Hotel Museu Llegendes de Girona. I am sure they will welcome you, too!
