I have travelled a fair bit not just in Europe but Australia, New Zealand, America and I can say with some certainty that Barcelona is my favourite city. We've been there a few times now and have already booked a trip for 2011. Each time we've flown into Girona Airport, hopped on the Bareclona Bus, arrived to the bus station and then caught the metro across the city. The hotel is a stones throw from the metro station so the journey couldn't be easier. Best of all you can pick up a Starbucks on the way! Last year we were lucky enough to get tickets to the Nou Camp and we asked at reception for advice on how to get there, the staff couldn't have been more helpful and told us exactly how to get there and back using public transport - it was easy.
The hotel is perfectly placed for touring Barcelona with a variety of places nearby for breakfast is if you don't want to eat in the hotel; the Bra Cafe on the way down to Playa de Catalunya was the place we ate most regularly because the coffee was good, the food was just simple and the cost was fair. There are 2 reasons for not giving this hotel 5 stars and in the grand scheme of things aren't that disastrous - the first is no tea and coffee making (I need tea the INSTANT I wake up in the morning as my day doesn't start well) and the beds are rock hard. Fair enough Starbucks is on the corner outside the hotel so I can get over the first problem but when staying for 6 nights, the bed is a bit of a problem. All in all, its the first hotel I'd look at booking when I'm in Barcelona.

Just got back from a 3 night stay at the sunotel central Barcelona. On arrival you find that none of the staff speak good English and that, to be honest, they are all a bit miserable. If you suffer from claustrophobia you will get a shock when you see the size of a basic room - the photos do not prepare you for how small it really is. They are mostly clean although we did have some hairs to wash down the plug hole in the bath before we dare use it. The breakfast is equally disappointing - not much choice, poor quality, cold and geared towards other nationalities in the main. The hotel does offer you a reasonable location from which to explore Barcelona but if you do not want to pay for a bus tour you will walk huge numbers of miles during your stay. Barcelona is well worth a visit though. A lovely, safe-feeling city with friendly people, good food and warm climate. It helps to put the disappointments of the hotel into perspective.

Having read some of the previous reviews of the hotel I was a little concerned as to what I would find when I arrived there. I should not have worried. The hotel is ideally located with only a 10-15 minute walk to Las Ramblas. Yes the road where it stands is busy - but most of them are in Barcelona. There are 2 Metro stations close by also. The hotel is officially classed as 4 star but realistically is a 3 star. The rooms are smallish but in my view you don't go to Barcelona to stay in your room. We were allocated a room on the 7th Floor with a very large balcony overlooking the main road with a superb view over the rooftops of the city. Some rooms however do not have this luxury and have an internal window looking out onto a central service area in the centre of the hotel. The rooftop terrace also has stunning views of the city and is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle with its small pool, jacuzzi and showers - all free to guests (even the towels are provided). Did not opt for breakfast as it appeared expensive at 14 euros per person but chose to eat at one of the nearby terrace cafes. The receptionists were always polite and willing to help and spoke very good English. Would I return to Barcelona and this hotel ?. Yes & Yes !!!

I am writing to advise you of certain details about our stay at the Sunotel,in Barcelona, of which I am far from happy.

First of all there was no functioning air conditioning in our hotel room. Given that the temperature in Barcleona was c. 34c this was near intolerable.

Secondly, the extractor fan in our bathroom did not work. Given that there were no windows in this room either, this probably led to the awful smell which emanated from the room.

Thirdly the reception were rude and unhelpful.

I advised the hotel reception of these matter on the first day of our stay. In response to the heating, the receptionist laughed at my matter of fact statement that the room was cooler with the window open . He indiacted that the hotel often has complaints about it's air conditioning - as if that was ok.

Nothing was done to addrress eiether the air conditioning or extractor fan issues during our stay. On departure I indiacted that I would not have been happy to pay for my stay and recieved a muted apology.

This hotel is not a 4 star hotel. The rooms are adequate but the 'double bed' was just to singles pushed together so don't expect to actually sleep in the same bed as your partner if you have one or in comfort if you don't. Bathrooms are ok. There is no air conditioning despite the front desk insisting there is. The temperature does not go below 17 degrees celcius which is nearly has warm as an english summer and the fan would struggle to compete with anything other than a small feather. The staff are just rude and unhelpful , at least until you leave and they couldn't be more helpful (tip time maybe?) The breakfast is very good, very good selection and plenty of it. Great location very central and just a 5-10 minute walk to La Rambla. If you can get it at a very good price then it is adequate but no more than that. Barcelona is buzzing. The historical north side is a great couple of days out. Watch out for the beggers as they are persistant. Don't get robbed by the restaurants on the main streets, find where the locals eat in the side streets. Can't wait to go back one day.
