Tiny, backstreet French style bar that has become quite infamous for....well to put it politely, for being a bit shabby but also for its live music and for serving Pastis! It is crowded when there are about a dozen people in there. It was opened in 1947 and I absolutely believe that it has not changed much, if at all. Unfortunately when we visited, the smell from the toilet was quite overpowering. It is a place that you will either love or hate. I don't think it is possible to be ambivalent about a visit there.

From the outside it looks like a place you should avoid. Inside though it is beautiful. The walls are filled with works of art and it hosts amazing music nights! The ventillation is really bad amd it smells like a sewer though...

Ive bin here a couple of times, i love to come here because the feeling is so authentic - you get a beer or a pastis and in the background is there nice music usually edith piaf its like being in a time warp.

a little tip: if there is a football game on then go there and watch it on the little tv. the bartender is an old man who are really passionated. i remember i saw the world cup final i 2010 and he gave us drinks and beer all night.

I get the 5 star and the 1 star reviews but not the 2, 3, 4 stars. You have to fall in love with this crazy bar the moment you walk in the door or flee in disgust. I love it. The New York Times reviewed this in 1990 before they cleaned up the Raval and commented on the trans prostitutes strolling by. They are long gone but I kept expecting a Brassai photo Madam to saunter out and offer us a lady of the night. I'm sure this place hasn't been cleaned since de Gaulle left power but in a crazy way it adds to the charm. Anyone who loved Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris will know where and when we are.

First up, if you want the owner to greet you with a skip and a dance, go somewhere else. He doesn't really care if you're there or not. Having said that, the place does have a charm and I would love to go back when there is a singer on. Has to be better then a La Ramblas bar!
