“Good location, not a great apartment”

We chose this apartment because of its location: out of the historic and touristy centre, but still close enough – but also close to the basilica Sagrada Familia.

The location is good, in the Eixample (pronounced ‘Eshamplay’) district which is a lovely area with lots of super architecture, shops and bars.

The apartment itself is on the ground floor, but a few steps up from the ground level. The common entrance hall and entrance are secure, clean and well-maintained. The flat is on the busy Carrer d’Arago, but at the back of the block and so there is no traffic noise. The apartments are generally quiet.

The internet in the apartment is excellent.

Inside, the apartment is considerably darker and smaller than you would imagine from the photos on the web.

It has very few useful windows:

- the window from the main bedroom opens into the central well of the block, so gives little daylight. Ditto the slatted window from the kitchen.
- The window from the single bedroom opens into the living room
- The windows from the living room and from the bunked bedroom open onto the terrace, which is largely enclosed

So, little natural light enters the flat. If you want to see the sky, you go out onto the terrace, stand by the wall and look up through the security bars.

The apartment is fine for two to four people, but any more would be just too much if you were planning to spend any time in the flat itself.

On arrival, the first thing that we noticed was an unpleasant smell, but we assumed that this was dampness, which would disappear if a few windows and doors were left open.

This treatment had no effect and we mentioned it to the owner, who said that no-one had ever mentioned this before, but we found that an earlier review (posted in March 14) had specifically mentioned the drain smell. After a few days we threatened to leave unless something was done and the owner made an appointment for a workman to come in the following week.

It was clear that the smell was a ‘drain’ smell and was related to the enclosed bathroom. The next day there was a violent rainstorm and the smell disappeared. When the workman came he identified that the outflow pipe from the bathroom had a hole beyond the U-bend, so clearly the smells from the drains (that would otherwise have been blocked by the U-bend) were coming up into the apartment. The guy worked hard (and noisily) for a day and the smell stayed away. The owner agreed to refund us for three days rental as compensation.

The apartment suffered from a lack of necessary attention to detail. Some of these things were corrected by the owner when we complained - but should have been noticed and corrected before our arrival, like the microwave plug not being properly secured into the wall.

There were a number of other small matters still outstanding on our departure, of which we have notified the owner, such as the broken DVD handset, chipped plates, handles missing from saucepans, shower head holder loose, toilet roll holder loose.

The apartment would benefit from closer attention by the owner.

we booked a taxi to pick us up from the airport and this was worth the money. The driver was polite and friendly and far less bother than trying to make our way from the airport. The apartment was fine. There was a bad smell which I think if from the drainage system rather than from the apartment itself. The double room was fine as were the other rooms although they were tight for space. The sitting room is small and to be honest I wouldnt say the the apartment was suitable for more than 3/4 people. The photographs make the apartment look much bigger than it really is. However the apartment felt secure and was in a good area of Barcelona, not far from the metro, or from the Sagrada Familiar. The kitchen was small, the cupboards had a bad smell and a lot of the crockery was chipped. As a base it was good and reasonably good value for money. It wouldnt take a lot to make it much better, all it needs is a wee bit of TLC.
