“One of the best hotels we have stayed in”
Reviewed 29 June 2012

I must admit that I have not read the other reviews so I am sorry if I repeat "stuff" that others have written already.

This is one of the best hotels I have stayed in. From now on when in Barcelona this is where we are staying !!!.

Great GREAT great hotel and staff.

If you get Ms. Monika at the front desk while checking in you have nothing to worry about. All the questions you might have had will be explained and answered before you even get a chance to ask them. She is wonderful.

A few tips :

If you come with a car use the Career del Pintor Fortuny str. entrance !!! Some of the streets around the hotel are closed due to construction work or are one way streets which makes it a rather tedious route to get back. See parking sign. Hotel is immediately on the left. THERE IS PARKING SPACE AVAILABLE !!! From there you will be directed to the parking which under the hotel.

If you like a quite room ask for one facing the career del Pintor Fortuny Street.

They is building work on the career de's Xucia str. They will finish someday but in the mean time the spanish works shouting while communicating with each other make more noise then the actual construction.

We stayed in room 529 >> the higher the better and quite.

For a quick bit try SAGARRA. It is just around the corner on career de's Xucia str. Opposite BAIL LOBO.
It is a hole in the wall but the food is great ( lunch & dinner ) and very affordable. You probably will have to wait for a table BUT it is worth it.

Make time to enjoy the hotel. Barcelona is wonderful but a swim on the roof terrace pool ( or the "other pool" in the basement ) after a long day is a must.

We had a wonderful stay. Thank you to the H 1989 staff.

Room Tip: If you like a quite room ask for one facing the Career del Pintor Fortuny Street.

While Barcelona was not exactly our cup of tea - Hotel 1898 was exactly as expected. It is right in the midst of the Rambla chaos, has a Starbucks next store, two breakfast restaurants in the same building and the famous market about a block away. The people in reception were very pleasant and accommodating, the rooftop bar and pool was ok but pricey and the gym was small and poorly equipped (like most hotels). About the only negative I can come up with is the price - very steep. We stayed in one of the deluxe rooms with a balcony. We are glad we had the additional outdoor space because the room is a bit cramped. Overall - it is a beautiful hotel but even if you decide to go 5 star and just pay the price - you may want to consider other options that provide a bit more value.

Room Tip: If you decide to go to Hotel 1898 - choose the Deluxe room with the balcony. You will be glad to ha...

We were very impressed with the standard of our room with a huge king size bed, flat screen TV and spacious bathroom. The indoor pool felt like we were in a grotto and very relaxing. The outside pool was on a terrace with some views across to the water and surrounding hills. We really couldn't fault the hotel.
Our only issue was the rampant theft in this beautiful city. We warn all other travellers to this city to be wary of crowds, street performers. metro and the markets. Having our backpack with both expensive cameras stolen from between our feet at the famous Boqueria markets left us with a sour taste.

My husband and I stayed here to celebrate his 40th Birthday in June this year. We had an amazing time. The hotel was fantastic and we spent four nigths of luxury in the heart of Barcelona. The location of the hotel is perfect and we spent the evenings wandering through the streets looking at the shops and soaking up the atmosphere. The staff were excellent and couldn't do enough for us - this included an upgrade and champagne in our room to celebrate my husband's birthday. The terrace bar and pool are just the place to spend a lazy afternoon relaxing and we spent an enjoyable last afternoon enjoying the spa.

I can't praise this hotel enough from the cleanliness, to the location and the staff. If you want a bit of luuxry - this is the place to go!

We flew into Barcelona at 7am from San Francisco, California and were exhausted. The staff checked us in upon arrival at around 9am (check-in is usually much later) and we were able to rest for a few hours before heading out. The decor of the hotel is modern and sophisticated. My spanish is not good enough to communicate effectively but everyone on staff was happy to speak English. Room is a bit small but absolutely beautiful. Wood floors and marble tiles in the bathroom. Luxurious towels and robes, a bidet and rain forest shower head. Also a nice big soaking bathtub. We forgot to bring power adapters and they happily supplied us with two (no charge). We enjoyed the rooftop lounge area and had excellent tapas and a lovely view at sunset. Soft, clean white sheets and a nice bed and I was ready to tuck in! We leave for our cruise tomorrow but I am so glad we chose this hotel for before the cruise. Really well worth it. So convenient to everything in Barcelona. Stay here, you'll love it!
