If you're looking for an hotel on the Rambla in the centre of Barcelona, convenient to the airport bus stop & the ever open tourist office in the Placa Catalunya just 250 metres away, close to Metro and bus links generally, then the 1898 cannot be bettered. Criticism that the hotel isn't quiet is unfair, given the noise from the Rambla below my balcony, the proximity of the metro rail running almost beneath the building & the neighbouring church bell, the hotel is a relative haven of peace within an almost frantically busy city and everything possible has been done to isolate visitors from the external distractions. Walking into this neo-colonial haven resplendent with wood floors, tasteful & expensive furnishing and large model trading ships, sea charts on the walls and large monochrome photographic murals, rooms with vast comfortable beds, quality bedding & dark green marble bathrooms; the guest is encouraged to rest & relax; sunglasses so essential outside can certainly be discarded. It's astounding that this is a four star hotel, albeit a prestige or premium grade, given the added politeness, quality and language expertise of all staff I encountered, so much effort is made at every level to please the client that it surely merits a five star crown in due course. Certainly the facilities, the rooftop terraces, pool & bar, sunlounge areas & seating are astounding, matching even the finest penthouse standard, with breakfast optional on the roof for a mere ten euros extra. Yet it was hard to resist using the calming restaurant area in the morning, overlooking the Rambla; breakfast facilities are generous & expansive with guests from all parts of the world being able to secure a satisfactory start to the day. For those who wish to snack quickly, or guests who like to gorge on many courses, there's no hurry for breakfast & staff are continually attentive & efficient and although breakfast is twenty-five euros, I had a deal whereby breakfast was included, either way it's generous, freshly prepared & diverse. The subterranean spa & pool area is quiet, well laid out, more than suitable for guests to relax in peace or to enjoy the facilities, the gymnasium, adding to the general tranquility & exclusivity of the atmosphere. The free wi-fi & computer access is impressive as most hotels are only too pleased to charge heavily for the privilege & it's evident that there are impressive conference facilities afforded to the business user. The bathroom is impressively stocked with toiletries, robes, free carpet slippers, grooming items & the room well provisioned with an impressive wooden box of notepaper and stationery, tea & coffee making facilities, quality bottled water, one has the distinct impression that everything conceivable is afforded to the guest without the usual extra charges attatched to so many quality hotel visits. Although the 1898 is not inexpensive, it offers amazing value for money where so much is on offer at no additional charge and when it's not fully booked, as it often is & deserves so to be, there are some great offers to be realised. My own experience of a superior room with balcony oevrlooking the Rambla added greatly to the quality of my visit; I was so impressed I attempted to book another night or two but there were no vacancies. Having stayed in some of the best hotels around the world, from New York most recently to Hanoi, Singapore and Paris, amongst other places, here in Barcelona is an hotel where it's genuinely difficult to find criticism & where you can find peace, friendly intelligent & multi-lingual staff, genuine professional courtesy & respect for guests at every level. The tasteful treatment of the historic building is a credit to the hotel management & will best suit the guest whose idea of a good hotel is far removed from concrete and glass and vast impersonal global corporate ugliness. Enjoy, I did.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the Rambla will be quieter, though it's no fault of the hotel that the Rambla ca...

A taste of luxury in the centre of the city - it's busy outside, but when you walk through the doors, the quiet historical building is instantly calming. Touches like an amazing spa, robes, slippers, water, sweets in your room, great toiletries, a cool bar with great staff, free wifi and computers made the whole thing specular. The roof top pool and bar is so very cool and niceThe bed was so vast I couldn't believe it. Overall - perfect

As someone who travels very frequently and has covered a huge expanse of the globe. I have to admit I've stayed in better more reasonable 5* hotels which included a breakfast. The location could not have been bettered for which it was chosen, directly on Las Ramblas but for what was offered the room rate did not befit the experience. I attempted to book H1898 directly many weeks ago but it was full, I eventually acquired a booking through a booking agent. a week before arrival H1898 produced a special 'Summer' deal which included breakfast, dinner, a drink and some other benefits, on contacting them directly and registering my disappointment I asked that as perhaps a good guest relation exercise they could include breakfast, they said they were unable to do this and would not hear of it, but we were promised a wonderful stay with wonderful service, but in all truthfulness this never happened.
The hotel itself was clean and the decor was befitting of the building. We booked a 'superior' room which was quite small and came with a balcony. I have to say I hate bathrooms where the shower is in the bath. The beds and bedding were of nice quality and very comfortable. Some of the woodwork needed touching up as there were several chips and knocks.
The best part of the hotel and stay was the rooftop terrace with a heated pool, bar and selection of comfy chairs and loungers along with fabulous views.

Stayed here in August 2011 for five nights and loved it!

It is close to Placa de Cataluna - which is very handy for tourists as this is where the tourism branch has an office.

Lovely rooms, great atmosphere, spotlessly clean and comfortable. Aircon was impressive in the middle of the Catalan summer and the staff were very helpful. Would definitely stay here again.

Stayed in Hotel 1898 in March one night only, but would come back again. Great location, room, spa, and amazing breakfast !!!!! I found a great deal £150 on one website that include breakfast in price and price was by far best, we stayed Wednsday to Thursday. Drink in hotel bar is not inexpensive but nice to have one(Guiness was 9 or 11 euro).
All staff are helpfull. My opinion that its not a big difference in what you get if you book more expensive room unless you go for the one that have a terrace , i have checked with reception at choice of hotel room option and from the plan i saw.
