I was looking for a central and inexpensive location to stay in Barcelona and was attracted to this hostal by the positive reviews. Having stayed in several places in France, I was prepared for the small bathroom but believe me, you wouldn't want to be more than average sized as if you dropped the soap in the shower, you needed to open the screen door to bend down and pick it up. All good fun! There was a bit of noise from the square but not if you shut the window. Also, as a previous reviewer commented, you could hear people in the next room and particularly in the corridor where voices and other sounds echoed.
However, the positives outweighed the negatives. The hotel was in a lovely location, the room had a safe (albeit you had to pay a deposit for the key for the safe AND for the TV remote - hadn't struck that before!); the room was clean and the staff were very friendly. One of the desk staff went above and beyond the call of duty and sent a email for me regarding my sick cat for which I was very grateful. Next time I travel to Europe I will make sure I had an ipad or similar to stay in touch, especially given the time difference.
The hotel was very close to Liceu metro station but not so easy to find as the streets around here are a rabbit warren and you can find the hotel by several different routes. I asked for it in another local hotel and they knew where it was and gave me accurate directions.
I think the best route might be to cross the road onto the Ramblas from Liceu metro (not the Bouqueria market side) and take the first left and then go right and then left.
It is enjoyable area to stay as you can walk around the Barri Gotic and down to the harbour.
My tip would be to catch the airport bus to Placa de Catalunya and walk down (approx 10-15 mins as the streets are very crowded). We caught the train from the airport and then changed at Passeig de Gracia to the metro and it was quite quite a bother changing trains and lugging cases up and down stairs. We caught the airport bus on the way back - but by then we knew our way around.

Room Tip: I opted for an exterior room as advised by another reviewer as I wanted a light room and it was nice...

This hotel was located in a perfect spot for visitng Barcelona. It was close to the metro and buses and only a few minutes walk from the Cathedral and metro to the beach. Rooms are small but we had 4 people in one room. Had two great balconies where we had grand-stand seats for the religous procession during Easter weekend. Lots of open air markets right outside hotel. The staff was super about helping us with directions and suggestions. Never thought about going to Olympic Park but she suggested it and it was beautiful in that area. Loved Barcelona and would stay at El Jardi again without hesitation.

Room Tip: Although rooms facing the square may be a little noiser, that is where you can see all the action ou...

el Jardi is in an excellent position BUT they certainly take advantage of this one good point...
I booked my room with them 2 months in advance using booking.com and secured a room on the 4th floor(which is quieter) @95 per night. When I arrived they gave me a 1st floor room next to the kitchenand the laundry which was soooooo noisy as i could hear the coffee maker and the toaster and the cleaners every morning at 6am-9am. I had to wear ear plugs to get any sleep.
They also charged me 114 euros a night instead of the 95 as the formular 1 grand prix was on!!!
They can put the price up without telling you untill you leave! I had to pay.
The staff were very nice tho.

Room Tip: Avoid room 1

The hostal is in the heart of the Gothic Quarter, right off the Las Ramblas. It was a sanctuary from the busy streets and crowds of Easter weekend. It was fun to look down on the goings-on from our 4th floor balcony. The staff was helpful, spoke English fairly well and someone was on-duty at the front desk 24/7. Room was clean, a good size for a hostal and our beds were made and towels changed each day. We had no problem sleeping with the street noise (but I always wear earplugs.) No WiFi in the room, only in the lobby. A few stairs to climb with our heavy suitcases, but not a big deal. I would recommend that you NOT arrive to any lodging in the Gothic Quarter, juggling suitcases, bags, and purses after dark. Pick pockets in this area are plentiful.
