The Barcelona Universal ticked all the boxes you'd want for a stay in Barcelona, without excelling in any particular area.

The breakfast was tasty, and offered from 7.30 til 11 most days on the first floor. At certain times it did get extremely busy and there were lineups and they seemed a little short on staff, but they did their best to provide good service, and the selection of food was ample.

The rooms were nice, clean and comfortable, with well-maintained furniture and decor, and a bed that offered a good night's sleep. We stayed on the 7th floor for 5 nights - we had a view over the rooftops of neighbouring houses, which was fine.

We found the location very handy, being an easy walk from the Gothic quarter and walkable distance to El Born, a trendy food/nightlife area. Also an easy walk to Las Ramblas.

The hotel did seem to attract an older sort of traveller - the breakfast buffet slightly resembled meal-time at a retirement home. Of course this wasn't any sort of problem, but we thought this may be of interest to older or younger travellers. There were almost no families and few younger couples.

We found the service a little impersonal, but again, it was perfectly fine; the Universal just didn't do anything to stand out in this department. We had three issues during our stay - the fridge didn't work, the batteries in our remote were flat, and our door lock malfunctioned. The first two issues were addressed while we were out one day, though the fridge never seemed to get properly cold. The door lock was addressed pretty promptly; a couple of trips to the front desk, 10 minutes sitting in the hallway, then a technician came and addressed it pretty quickly.

The pool deck on the roof was very busy, but was a nice enough spot to catch some sunshine if you could find a couple of chairs together.

All in all, we'd recommend the Universal for a stay in Barcelona, mainly based on its location and in providing an all-around pleasant stay, without any above-and-beyond elements.

Room Tip: If you want a view, you'll want to be on at least Floor 7.

I agree with most of the reviews on this hotel but think some people may have expectations far to high for what they are paying. We booked through late rooms and paid approx £80 per night ( included breakfast) . The reception and door staff at the hotel were extremely efficient, helpful and spoke excellent English ( puts us to shame) we had arrived early straight from airport so room was not yet ready but a luggage was happily stored in a security area and we went off to explore. If you turn left out of hotel and 2nd left you will walk down to the rambles takes about 10 mins. Try and travel bag free if poss you will feel a lot more secure. Found a fab coffe shop called Artisa it's on the opposite side of the rd you come out of and sells amazing cakes , icecream and rolls. When we returned to hotel our room was ready, we had asked for a quiet one if poss at the back and it was brill, ok no reall view but very peaceful ( hotel on very busy rd) large room, large bed, large bathroom, excellent facilities all round very happy. Breakfast was busy but lots of choice and avail from 7-11 so ample time to go. Roof top pool small but fine ( don't pay extra for it as no one checks). We chose to eat near the hotel at night as after a days sight seeing it saved another walk. Try AUGUST, ( avoid the brightly lit white one next to it total rip off and surly staff) IL JAMON, also one to the right of hotel on corner of light opposite Orange shop something beginning with C it was brill. All in all excellent stay and hotel enjoy

We really enjoyed staying here. The location was good with a 10 minute walk to La Ramblas. There were several good restaurants within 5 minutes as well. The room was very comfortable, but if you are from N. America somewhat small. It had 3 english channels on the TV which when you have jet lag is very much appreciated. The staff was also very accommodating, and spoke great english.
The breakfast buffet is defiantly worth purchasing if you are planning to stay here.
Their website says it is between 25 and 35 Euros from the airport by taxi and that is exactly what it cost.
This is a great place to stay that is a very good value for your money! I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights before going on a cruise. It is situated in a very central position with the metro station just outside. That said, the hotel is within 10-15 minute walk to the La Rambla area and a walk to watch the Magic Fountains one evening only took just over 20 minutes. Just one small criticism, we arrived fairly late, after 10 pm, and check in took some time, there were 2 parties in front of us and only one guy on reception and the reception area is fairly small. We were given a room on the second floor which was really nice and had its own balcony. The room was of a really good standard with 2 really large comfortabled beds and plenty of wardrobe space. We were also given a bottle of sparkling wine upon our arrival (thank you very much). There is free wifi and free use of computers in the reception area. The hotel has a swimming pool and gym area on the top floor, quite small but a nice area to sit and relax and "have a dip". The breakfast was also very good. The staff, both on reception, foyer and waiters were extremely friendly and the reception staff in particular were so helpful with information as to what to see and do. We had a great stay and would really recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Second floor away from the street with a balcony.

I was there for 3 nights, great room, a bit small, but it's Barcelona.

The room:
Beds were comfortable, great pillows, bathroom is really nice, we had a view of the street, the ocean and Montjuic. Yes, it is louder because it's a buys street but we slept just fine.

The hotel:
The rooftop is amazing, you can get great views of the city and the little pool is a great way to relax after numerous hours of wondering through the city. The subway station is right in front of the entrance and it takes only 10-15min to walk to downtown and La Rambla.

Recommend it all the way!
