“Convenient and standard.”
Reviewed 13 March 2012

I don't understand why this hotel is considered 5-stars. It is a clean hotel with an interesting design across the street from the Guggenheim. The morning breakfasts were the best meals I ate each day (dining alone in Spain is a real drag), and the views from the roof terrace splendid. The check-in and check-out went quickly and there were no problems. Housekeeping was always good. Room service is very basic and not that good, but not overpriced. Laundry was overpriced, but returned in good condition. Anytime I needed anything, the staff responded very quickly.

The problems: The bed was worn, though the sheets fresh and of good quality. The Internet was free, but the connection speed was just dreadfully slow, and you had to log in multiple times, and the passwords were only good for a 24-hour period. Also, the TV has only 2 English options, BBC and CNN. Boring! The carpets were a nasty yellow color, though they did take care to vacuum them well each day. The toiletries were in very badly designed little, tiny cubic containers and not of good quality.

From my experience with Spanish hotels, this hotel is typical. Even the upper-level hotels are not on the Asian standards I'm used to, and have little quirks. Overall, I enjoyed my visit and it proved to be a good base while in the Basque region.

Room Tip: Make sure you do not get a room that faces the inner courtyard. You need to have a window room that...

A 5 start hotel should simply not have a room like the one I was given! I booked a standard room (oprions were: basic, standard and Guggenheim view plus the suites) so I expected the room not to have the view on the museum...but surely I expected it to have a window. Well, believe it or not it had a tiny piece od dark glass that was unopenable and viewing the internal hall, there was no natural light at all in the room, I had to keep artificial light on all the time and even worse it had no air. When I turned the air con on, smelly dust came out of the unit, so options were either no air or breathing dust which made me feel sick for all my stay. After coping with this for two nights I asked to change room and was given a better room, with a real window on the back street. I cannot believe that the two rooms were the same category and still cannot believe that they have at all rooms like the first one they gave me. I regret not asking to change immediately, but I just wanted to have a relaxing time without arguing so tried to resist but it was just impossible. I was not impressed with the service either: I am all for informality and more than happy to carry my own luggage to my room, but surely in a 5 star hotel someone should show you your room? And surely if they come to service your room and you are inside they should try again and again and clean it once a day and re-doing it once in the evening without you having to call them? Another thing that was not up to the expectations was the gym: not even one single running machine and the two bikes had their feet holders broken so were unusable. They should just shut it and say that it's unavailable until they sort it out. The only 5 star level item of this hotel was the breakfast and the terrace where you can enjoy it. That was top notch. Other than that, no more than 2 stars.

Room Tip: even if you go for the standard room they can give you a windowless one so if you care about breathi...

Lovely, helpful staff and great bar (with great prices!). Have never seen such an extensive array of toiletries provided and I have stayed in a lot of hotels! A kettle and tea making facilities in the room would have been good but that is the only criticism I can think of. We didn't fork out the extra for the Guggenheim view but in retrospect wish we had, the atrium view wasn't so bad though - and you can still go up to the 7th floor for brekkie (or just a nosey like us)! to appreciate the fact that you are right opposite 'El Goog' - you literally could not be any closer. Plus we got free tickets when we were checking in - unexpected bonus!

I'm a big fan of 'rooms with a view' and the Domine Bilbao certainly fits the bill. A Guggenheim Museum view room is much more expensive than one without view, and you can still get the view from the breakfast room, but still I found the extra charge worth it.
Other than the view, as has been pointed out by most reviewers, the hotel is excellent. The staff are very friendly, breakfast is excellent, the rooms comfortable, the design trendy.. what more can you say?
Notwithstanding all the above, there were 2 items that a 5-star hotel should try to improve on.While the Guggenheim Club rooms offer an incredible view, they are not sound-proof. On the Friday, the museum was open till 1 am and from that time till almost 2 the noise of the guest leaving the museum penetrated into the room where you could literally hear every word spoken below on the street.
The second item that's inconvenient is the hotel's wifi. They seem to have tagged onto a national system, which means that every day you get a new (and complicated) ID and password and if you leave the hotel and come back you have to re-enter the ID and password all over again. On the iPhone, you first have to activate Safari and then enter the ID/password. Very cumbersome system.
Other than that would stay there again and would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Guggenheim Club rooms for a great view - and a price to go with it.

I stayed at Domine Bilbao (now part of Silken Group) already a few times and find it one of the most valuable hotels in town, next to Sheraton. The service is at very high level, the rooms are large and well furnished, the breakfast room on the highest floor offers a very nice view of the city and it is easy to reach by car (garage) and by any transportation as very central.

Room Tip: Rooms are either towards the Atrium or to the outside. Outside is indeed more picturesque...
