Very happy we stopped at the Kartoffelhaus. I am amazed how many delicious dishes the lowly, underrated potato can produce. Seating a bit tight, but nice atmosphere inside. Weather permitting, outside seating is even better, as the restaurant is in the heart of a pedestrian only area, in the middle of the square. Wonderful to have a good meal and watch the world go by at the same time.
The potato pancakes with apple sauce, were THE best I have ever tasted. Crisp on the outside, not greasy, but moist and light on the inside. My sister had potato gratin with spinach, she said was too watery. I also had a baked potato with all the trimmings, but that is an American favorite we are all familiar with. Still a great, tasty satisfying dish.
Service friendly, prices acceptable.

If you go here, go early and not at the dinner time 6 pm and after, or you will need a reservation! We decided to go here as the menu was intriguing; Potatoes with different toppings, Local German Foods, and a cozy atmosphere. Seating is a bit tight, but the food and friendly service along with a few cold beers make that all disappear. Try the Chicken Stroganoff and the Hacienda Potatoes. Relax and Enjoy! We will return!!

I believe this restaurant is also know as Wittenberger Kartoffelhaus.

The potatoes were a plenty. We arrived early to find most of the tables empty but reserved. We almost turned away but the helpful staff found us seats at the bar. Before long the place was packed and we were enjoying four splendid dishes.

We just arrived and wanted to check out some local cuisine. This restaurant had very high marks and we wanted something with consistency. Perfect!

Once we walked in the door, we were greeted by a German speaking waitress. Through limited conversation, we were told that we needed a reservation however we were escorted near a corner of the bar. After sitting there for about 10 minutes, we were greeted by a young man that mentioned that a table had opened up and we would be able to relocate. Very customer-friendly!

Needless to say, our meals consisted of large portions and we left content. We would return again but would like to speak a little more German.

This was one of the few places open when we visited Wittenberg on a national holiday, the Day of German Unity. We waited in line to get into this small, wood lined restaurant. It was decorated in rough wooden paneling, colorful curtains and rough hewn tables. Our waitress did not speak English, but quickly found an English version of the menu for us. The restaurant was packed but most of the patrons seemed to be associated with the girls' choir from neighboring Halle whom we had seen performing I the Schlosskirche earlier. Everything on the menus is centered around potatoes ; starters, soups, grilled items casseroles or simple baked potatoes with various fillings. Everything we tried, soups, schnitzel Hamburg style, potato pancakes plus dessert were all wonderful and inexpensive.
