“The is THE place to stay in Dessau.”

If you are going to Dessau expressly to see the Bauhaus, then you must stay at the B&B at Kleinring 5 in the Torten housing estate. I will admit that Kleinring 5 is not very conveniently located. The Torten neighborhood is pretty far from the center of town, and the nearest restaurant is a bit of walk. However, Kleinring 5 is a genuine Bauhaus house in a Bauhaus neighborhood. There is another B&B right across the street from the Meisterhauser, but staying at Kleinring 5, you trade location for experience. When else are you going to sleep in a house designed by Gropius? Moreover, Kleinring 5 is close to the Steel House, the Mendelssohn Center, and other peripheral Bauhaus sites.

The owner is extremely nice and accommodating. The breakfast was very generous.

I definitely recommend this inn.

You can purchase a 72 hour Dessau Card (8 Euros) at the information booth outside the Dessau railway station and at other locations. It's valid for trams and buses and includes discounts to the Bauhaus University, Master houses, and the Junkers Museum.

From the railway station you can walk to the Bauhaus University and Master houses by taking the stairs in the corner near the bridge. Or, you can take the 10 bus and return on the 11 bus. There is also infrequent service by both buses to the Kornhaus restaurant.

Take the #1 tram to get to Kleinring 5 or to visit the other houses in the Torten development.

Bernd Eichhorn speaks good English and has a wealth of information about the Torten.

We enjoyed our stay in Kleinring 5.

Kleinring 5 has been in the family of the charming and informative Herr Eichorn for many years and is a type II house on the Torten estate. The family has done their best to restore and decorate it in 1930s colours and style ( without the original earth closet !!) but added heating and a modern bathroom and shower for guests to use. You can sit out under the old walnut tree and imagine the lives of the original inhabitants who would have spent many hours growing vegetables and looking after the rabbits in their long garden. In the morning Herr Eichorn brought us a huge breakfast from his house across the road at no 14 and even sandwich bags so we could make a lunch from what we could not manage. Much of the information in the house is in English and we learned a great deal about life in Dessau from Herr Eichorn so we were well set up for our trip to the Bauhaus exhibition itself where the cafe bar stays open until 9pm or later ; although we also went and ate at the Kornhaus restaurant on the Elbe. Our trip to the Master houses was marred slightly by only one of them being open and no information in English or English speakers available so we stood in Klee and Kandinsky’s studios and paid our respects. Another interesting place to go which is not widely advertised by the tourism agency is The Junkers Museum for aircraft enthusiasts.
All this and a piece of history for 60 euro a night. Just one hint- double check your reservation confirmation as mine did not get through and I was told this has happened before.
My thanks to the other trip advisors who first recommended this house which is a great base for looking at all the interesting things in the Dessau area.

We found a great B&B in one of the Gropius buildings in the Torten estate. It is called the Torten Bed and Breakfast and has the original windows and has even been restored to the original interior colors. The price was very reasonable (55 Euro/Night for 2 People) and includes a huge breakfast. You need to take the street car to get there from the city center but it only takes about 10 minutes.
