“Very peaceful retreat”
Reviewed 13 September 2015 for a stay in August 2015

As Christians, my friend and I were looking for somewhere to spend a few days in retreat. We were not disappointed by this charming little cottage, located just off the village square. Witheridge is a delightful village in a very quiet location which served our needs very well; we visited the church, made use of the traditional village shop and spent one evening in The Mitre Inn which serves excellent food, we also enjoyed a 6 mile walk around the local countryside as well as travelling to local towns and a National Trust property.

The cottage itself was very comfortable and met our needs very well. We were visited a couple of times by Marian, who manages the property on behalf of the owners, and she was extremely helpful. She informed us that the property had only recently become a holiday let so we were impressed with the set up of the cottage and the care given to ensure that all our basic needs and more were met. We firmly believe that this cottage will be in popular demand as time goes on.

It is a small cottage and only sleeps four but it has some very charming, rustic characteristics. Neither of us had been in a thatched property before and I had the pleasure of sleeping in the four poster bed. Whilst the cottage is marketed as being suitable for families with children aged five or over, neither I or my friend, as mothers, felt that this would be the case. The staircase is very steep, uneven depth and on an acute spiral which is not suited to small children especially if they got up in the night to use the only toilet located on the ground floor. We would also apply the same argument to anybody who is elderly and/or slightly infirm too. The property is listed as not suitable for wheelchair access, but I feel it should say not suitable for anybody with a physical disability because of the stairs and toilet location. I have chronic spinal problems and I was very wary of the staircase.

However, would we return to this cottage? Yes we would in a heartbeat. How would I sum this property up; ideal for adults, couples or families with older/teenage children who are looking for a retreat type holiday, or as a base to explore the beautiful countryside that comes with this location.

“Total relaxation”
Reviewed 2 September 2015 for a stay in August 2015

A most wonderful cottage set in a sleepy village,a fantastic place to explore Devon or just lock the door and hide away in a tranquil setting and find yourself.i love this place, the exposed beams, four post bed, quirky stairs and walls that are anything but straight all add to the charm.the local pub is welcoming and the food is good without being overpriced. I will be returning.
