We stayed for 4 nights at the Domstern Hotel and would definitely recommend it. We booked a junior suite..room 400..and it suited us perfectly. Unlike the couple from Devon who also reviewed room 400, we actually liked the decor...not super-modern, but quite contemporary. The room was spacious, air-conditioned, and immaculately clean, with a large bathroom, and the beds were very comfortable. There was space for all our gear, and everything in the room worked very well, including the free internet. Location was perfect, close to the station and to the main sights, and there was a big supermarket also close to the hotel. Other reviews were a bit critical of the breakfast as well as the breakfast room. However, we enjoyed the breakfasts...nice fresh items with enough of everything...and there was never a problem with too many people in the breakfast room. The only glitch that happened was that on one day the breakfast didn't get started until late (staff issue we think) and we missed it because we had a train to catch. It was a Sunday, and those sorts of things do happen in smaller hotels. The rate we paid was a bit more than what we have paid at the other hotels on our travels in Germany, however we think that overall the extra was worth it for the room and facilities. And the little chocolates on the pillow each night were very nice!

Room Tip: Rooms on the higher floors and away from the lift would probably be quieter, but the street location...

Dear jnjcoogee,

thanks from all of us here at Domstern, it is fabulous to hear that you enjoyed your stay in Cologne and here at Domstern so much!
Concerning the decor in our Junior Suite definitely everyone has a different opinion.
Fact is, that while we changed most of the singles and doubles and implemented a more modern style, the Suite, except for the flatscreen TV, is more traditional or conservative than the rest of the house.
The superior double will have a more contemporary feel, but does not offer such a nice daylight bathroom with extra tub!
Both rooms are really nice and it depends what you prefer...
Concerning the breakfast we definitely need to apologize!
Because of some public holidays we changed the schedule but obviously did not communicate this clearly enough, would we have known that you leave early we would definitely have found a solution for that.
Whenever there are special needs or requests please do not hesitate to let us know in advance!
Concerning the rate, it is true- the Suite is a little more expensive (usually 25,- per night) but the extra space and amenities in our opinion are well worth the surcharge!

Thanks again for your excellent feedback,
please stay with us

I have just returned from a 2 night stay in Cologne, and Hotel Domstern was the perfect base to explore the city. I stayed in a single room, which I felt had adequate space for my needs, and the room also had a nice high ceiling. The bed was more like a single and a half,so very spacious for one,and would have to be one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept on in a hotel. Everything was lovely and clean, and breakfast was great, lots of different options, and as previously mentioned, the days are themed,so there was something cooked each morning relative to the country. Free internet that worked really well,a kettle with tea/coffee can be put in your room on request (I didn't bother) and you can rent ipads as well.

Might be helpful to mention that the reception is not staffed 24hours. During my stay over the weekend, the staff were there until 6pm and you have keycard access to get into the hotel. They do provide a number to call if you needed help, which was useful as noone turned up on Sunday morning for the breakfast service. After a phone call however, someone was there within half an hour,so wasn't too much of an inconvenience. The weather was quite warm while I was there, around 26 degrees, and I would say that I wouldn't have wanted it much hotter,as there isn't air conditioning in the rooms. My window was fully opening though and I was able to leave it open during the night,no problems with noise at all.

You can pretty much walk everywhere from the hotel around the main sights,or if you want to use the tube, its only a 2 min walk away,as is the main train station, location really couldn't get any better! The staff were friendly, and I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: I had room 103,which was not facing the street,it was very quiet, even with the window wide open.

We stayed here for seven nights, in a twin room (two twin beds) for the first two night, and in a double room (one larger bed) for the rest of the stay. The location was excellent, deep in the Altstadt and only minutes from the Hauptbahnhof, the Dom, and Hohestrasse and Schildergasse.

The room itself with comfortable but not large. The first had an older TV set atop a wardrobe, making for awkward viewing angles; our second room was a bit newer. Both had the challenge of a cramped shower with a mixer and handle that stuck out into the middle, making it too easy to change the water from hot to cold or shut it off with an accidental bump. The bathroom fan also had a slightly defective motor, giving a whirr-bump noise whenever it was on. At first I thought someone in a nearby room was playing loud music. Additionally, the rooms are not soundproof. My first night I heard one of my neighbors snoring through the wall, and other nights I heard people talking.

Service was great. The staff had a lot of patience for our desire to practice our German, so they were happy to try speaking to us in German and then repeat themselves when we didn't know certain words. One or two of them even discussed language with me at length, as I tried to figure out how certain words or ideas translated from English. Finally, when I was sick and needed to stay in my room, they sent up an electric teakettle with a tray of teas and sugar to help keep me healthy. I was so grateful!

Breakfast was special. The staff goes out of its way to provide as much homemade or locally-produced food as possible, all of it delicious. They also have an espresso machine for guests, and the hotel prepares a small booklet each day to give guests a sense of what's going on that day (including weather) and what a visitor to the city could do that day.

In all, it's a nice hotel with great location, but the staff is really what makes this place special.
