The location of the hotel is ideal. From the busy Hay Market (Heumarkt) we could explore the old town on foot, take walks along the Rhine or cross a bridge to the opposite river bank. It’s also very easy to take public transport from Heumarkt. Because we stayed here over the weekend, we preferred a room at the back, where it is quieter. Our room was large and offered a nice view onto the hotel courtyard, Great St Martin's church and Östermannplatz. We particularly appreciated the stone floors and the absence of unnecessary cushions and plush. Behind a corner there was a doorless wardrobe, which we found somewhat surprising as there were only two small drawers in the nightstands and one in the desk to store private belongings. The beds were very good, but beware of the sharp edged nightstands! The red curtains did not sufficiently block the light and we woke up rather earlier than we wanted. The bathroom was roomy and had a shower with a nice big shower head. There was no bidet. The XII Apostel is a three star hotel, so we had no minibar and no safe in our room, but we were provided with two small bottles of water (one sparkling, one still) daily and vouchers for a welcome drink at the hotel bar. The hotel toiletries, a tube of 30 ml of shampoo and one of bath/shower gel of The Spa Collection were not replaced during our 4 day stay, which is really odd. We also sadly missed a shower cap, but a blow dryer was provided. Room prices vary wildly according to the day. We paid twice as much on Friday and Saturday than on weekdays. The weekend prices are a bit steep.

The large breakfast buffet offers everything you would want (or not want) to eat at breakfast. The jam, eggs, cheese and salmon were good, but we found the quality of the bread rather disappointing. It is possible to order excellent cappuccino. We also liked the fact that there were fresh oranges. Patrons can sit in the restaurant or in a pleasant courtyard at the back of the hotel, shaded by large red umbrellas. Unfortunately, a lot of people smoke at breakfast and there is no dedicated area for non-smokers. A newspaper-like publication containing the hotel restaurant menu and wine list can be found on every table, which is nice if you plan to eat in. After checking-out, we left our luggage close to the front desk. Contrary to what seems customary in hotels nowadays, tags were attached to every piece of luggage and they were checked carefully before we could take any luggage. More kudos for Hotel XII.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quieter

Upsides: The hotel is in a great location. Loads of restaurants and bars nearby. Easy to take the tram from near hotel to convention center (Koln Messe). I believe the 1 and 9 trams take you right there in 5-10 mins but confirm with hotel. A good choice if you want to be in the center of town near shopping and restaurants. Eat and drink then walk to your hotel room. Easy!

Downsides: Horrible Internet. Literally unusable after 8pm. Couldn’t connect or send an email. Not a good hotel if you need internet for business. In the evening I needed to do business on my computer with the office back in the states. The internet made it extremely difficult. On the last day of my stay, someone at the front desk suggested I try the public Wifi available for free in the city center. Wish they would have suggested this earlier. It worked OK although you only get 1 hour wifi at a time. Then you have to re-sign in.

Warning if your room is in the front of the hotel facing the plaza. It's very loud because of all the bars and restaurants. Noise went on until late at night. Perhaps the hotel should consider new windows that keep noise out. Bring ear plugs! The window coverings are very thin and let all the light come through early in the morning so hard to sleep in if your sensitive to light in the morning. No telephones in the room. If you need something from the front desk, walk down stairs.

Summary: Good enough hotel if you get a reasonable price and you want to step out the hotel and walk to shopping, restaurants, and bars in city center. But be prepared for noise if you face the plaza. Not ideal for the business traveler if you require good internet connection.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms facing the plaza. The windows are thin and lots of noise from the bars and restaurants c...

The location is really excelent: just in the city centre. My room was large. The bathroom seems to be recently renovated and it was very good. The forniture was a bit old. The room was clean and the people at the reception very kind. As a negative aspect, I booked the room using Booking and the price they gave me did not included local taxes

Super location if you want to be bang in the middle of things. The hotel is above a restaurant so there is some noise from that and also from the street. The staff were polite but not particularly helpful. Our room was cold on arrival - they hadn't put the heating on. Rooms were clean and adequate. Breakfast was poor - the scrambled egg was not edible and the selection of fresh fruit was very poor. Also the dining room (where you have breakfast) was freezing cold. We ate breakfast outside the hotel for the rest of the trip.

Room Tip: Room 15 on 4th floor has great view of the square but there is some noise.
