The location of the hotel is ideal. From the busy Hay Market (Heumarkt) we could explore the old town on foot, take walks along the Rhine or cross a bridge to the opposite river bank. It’s also very easy to take public transport from Heumarkt. Because we stayed here over the weekend, we preferred a room at the back, where it is quieter. Our room was large and offered a nice view onto the hotel courtyard, Great St Martin's church and Östermannplatz. We particularly appreciated the stone floors and the absence of unnecessary cushions and plush. Behind a corner there was a doorless wardrobe, which we found somewhat surprising as there were only two small drawers in the nightstands and one in the desk to store private belongings. The beds were very good, but beware of the sharp edged nightstands! The red curtains did not sufficiently block the light and we woke up rather earlier than we wanted. The bathroom was roomy and had a shower with a nice big shower head. There was no bidet. The XII Apostel is a three star hotel, so we had no minibar and no safe in our room, but we were provided with two small bottles of water (one sparkling, one still) daily and vouchers for a welcome drink at the hotel bar. The hotel toiletries, a tube of 30 ml of shampoo and one of bath/shower gel of The Spa Collection were not replaced during our 4 day stay, which is really odd. We also sadly missed a shower cap, but a blow dryer was provided. Room prices vary wildly according to the day. We paid twice as much on Friday and Saturday than on weekdays. The weekend prices are a bit steep.
The large breakfast buffet offers everything you would want (or not want) to eat at breakfast. The jam, eggs, cheese and salmon were good, but we found the quality of the bread rather disappointing. It is possible to order excellent cappuccino. We also liked the fact that there were fresh oranges. Patrons can sit in the restaurant or in a pleasant courtyard at the back of the hotel, shaded by large red umbrellas. Unfortunately, a lot of people smoke at breakfast and there is no dedicated area for non-smokers. A newspaper-like publication containing the hotel restaurant menu and wine list can be found on every table, which is nice if you plan to eat in. After checking-out, we left our luggage close to the front desk. Contrary to what seems customary in hotels nowadays, tags were attached to every piece of luggage and they were checked carefully before we could take any luggage. More kudos for Hotel XII.
