My wife and I went here the day after a significant birthday. We'd been in Bonn for a month on business and tries quite a number of restaurants which were mostly pretty average. This place is a world away. Absolutely first class. Fantastic food - each plate was a work of art, as well as full of well matched flavours and the service was great too. Spare some time during your meal for a brief stroll out to the river (across the road). We took the four course meal (the options range up to 7) With the amuse's and (wonderful bread/butter options, best I've had or seen anywhere) others that was plenty. My pescatarian wife was well accommodated as well.

We did not know what to expect and almost walked past the restaurant as it is inconspicuously built into the wall of what looks like an ancient bulwark. Very close to the shores of the Rhine (but no tables with a view).

What we did not know was that on weekends they only sell the full menu gastronomique, but as we had not been told when making our reservation the very friendly and competent waiters let us order à la carte (we were not very hungry). We almost regretted that because the food was spectacular. We had King Crab and Foie Gras for starters, and John Dory (St. Pierre) and Lamb for mains. Absolutely fabulous. Also the selection of amuse bouche gems we were offered. Delightful.

All served in a super friendly and relaxed, non-fussy atmosphere.

Worth the detour from Cologne, definitely.

We had the 4 course tasting menu with matching wines, which with all the extra amuse bouche ended up being 10 courses! The different flavours in the courses were amazing! If ever we return to Bonn we will definitely return to Kaspars.

Felix Kaspar is an amazing chef with incredible innovation. The explosion of tastes in the mouth, coupled with amazing presentational skills, renders a dinner at this restaurant an experience above all other michelin starred restaurants in Bonn. Being a relatively new addition to the scene, there are still some teething pains that will no doubt be fixed as the restaurant matures. One issue was the unacceptably long wait between each course and the next; the whole meal lasted five whole hours - possibly a sign of an understaffed kitchen that day! We skipped the petit fours at the end since we could no longer stay seated... Nonetheless, I have no doubt that the second Michelin star is forthcoming sooner rather than later.

When I booked the table I asked what time between 6.30 and 7.30 pm would be most convenient - and made the reservation for 7 pm. After having heard much about the excellence of the food we were greatly looking forward to our evening. And we were not disappointed regarding the food: innovative, creative, many different textures and perfectly combined variety of tastes, attentive service and quite a decent wine list.

But: We arrived together with 2 other parties, 3 more parties were already seated. And there was 1 waiter and one apprentice. So it took a bit of time before we could order food and wine - the 4 course menu. And then we waited ... and waited. 1 h after our arrival we finally got the appetizers, after the aperitiv had long been finished. Another 30 min or so, and the first amuse bouche arrived, and then after 9 pm the second. By that time we were on our 2nd bottle of water. And no word of explanation or apology from the staff. From what I could see the other parties had the same problem, also the ones that arrived before us. At one moment we were wondering whether we would be home by midnight. Luckily things moved a bit faster once the first course was served - around 9.30.

Yes, the food was excellent, but leaving your guests sipping water (and a bit of wine) for almost 2½ h is simply not on.
