“Central 4 star hotel on the Spree”
Reviewed 6 May 2012

The Melia is part of a Spanish chain and has a strong Spanish theme in the hotel. It is very central with excellent connections to the U & S Bahn and even the boat tours, it is on Freidrich Strasse a short walk from Museum Island and the Unter den Linden. The hotel staff are very helpful and do everything with a smile which is not always the case in a city centre hotel. We had a room on the executive floor "The Level" although the promised view was actually of the KPMG building across the road! We did have the usual exec level benefits but decided to eat breakfast in the main dining room as the choice was more extensive, we would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: The Level is good value for money if you can get a deal. Book breakfast with your room as it is exce...

We stayed a total of 9 nights in a regular guest room in this wonderful hotel. It is very well maintained, spotless, and very quiet. The hotel is located within easy walking distance of the museum island and the famous Unter den Linden street. There are lots of restaurants near the hotel and along the river. A long walk or river boat ride (next to the hotel) along the river brings you to many of the important sights. The metro is near the front of the hotel and the S-train and tram is within a block, making it very easy to go anywhere in Berlin easily. However, if you prefer taxis, it was a breeze getting a taxi by the hotel. Our room was very comfortable, It had lots of space for our luggage, two comfy chairs, a desk, and a bench. The hotel breakfast buffet was fantastic. It had pretty much anything you would want - eggs, meats, breads, cereals, yogurts, smoked salmon, fresh fruit, champagne, etc. The breakfast room has a view of the river Spree which isn't the most picturesque at that spot, but not bad. The staff spoke excellent English and were very friendly and helpful. There were only 2 downsides - the lighting in the bathroom and having to pay to use the internet.

Room Tip: Our room which was very quiet faced away from the street.

Just completed a multi-day stay at the Melia Berlin (Friedrichstrasse) and I have to say I came away thoroughly impressed.

Room was spotlessly clean, with modern fixtures in the bathroom, and wonderful contemporary decor in a relaxing yet fresh colour scheme. Great lighting. Lots of closet space and hangers, with a nice soft robe and slippers. Heated floor in bathroom made things very cozy. North American guests might be a bit taken aback by the lack of an iron and coffee service, but this seems to be the norm for many continental hotels. An iron and ironing board can be delivered to your room, however, as/if needed.

The food in the restaurants and delivered by room service was exceptional. Great presentation, fresh ingredients, and very tasty. Yes, breakfast is expensive (22 euros) but you can get very competitive breakfast-included rates by booking through the hotel's website (e.g. 118 euros). And I've never before experienced such great service. Restaurant staff are very attentive and polite, seeming to arrive just at the right moment when something is required, and not more.

Location is great; just a few steps from the Friedrichstrasse U- and S-Bahn (underground) stations, as well as the main DB train station. Convenient late-opening grocery store and a pharmacy/drug store inside and adjacent to the train station. [Note: beer, wine, and spirits are also available in German grocery stores!!]. Right alongside the River Spree, too, which offers nice views from many of the windows. Good pubs and restaurants just across the bridge to the North. A morning jog along the river is a great way to start the day, and offers great views of local landmarks.

If I had to be critical, like other reviewers the cost of internet access and telephone calls would be the only disappointment. Internet access is actually purchased via a T-Mobile hotspot, which as of April 2012 offered one hour for about 5 euros, and a 10-hour block for 20 euros.

Overall, however, I found the Melia Berlin to be an outstanding hotel. A definite recommend.

Room Tip: Inner courtyard rooms are very quiet, but with a view of, well, other rooms. Street side rooms -- es...

This is a really nice hotel, well situated, comfortable rooms and it seems odd in this day and age that the one thing they do not offer is free, or cheap, Internet access. There are some computers available to guest in the reception area but Internet access is expensive. Apart from that I was very impressed by the service and staff. The breakfasts were very good and there is an excellent tapas restaurant on the ground floor.

Room Tip: Ask for room overlooking the river
