We visited this place several times during our stay in Berlin and it was spot on, very well kept Guinness and Kilkenny and the one pan Irish breakfast was delightful.

Ok, picture the scene. It’s 7pm, mid-July in Berlin. Your parents are visiting for the weekend and you and your family want to go somewhere nearby to sit outside, have some food and a couple of drinks. It’s been a long, hot day and everyone is a bit tired. You just want to relax and wind down.

Not so in the Kilkenny Irish pub in Hackescher Markt! Since football was on the TV (inside), we were told that we would have to move away from 8pm as no kids are allowed after this magical hour when chaos and riots ensue and they “cannot guarantee our child’s safety!” (exact quote).

At first we took the advice with a smile. After all, we were sitting way outside, at the edge of their front patio, practically on the footpath were nothing could go really wrong. We didn’t want to stay out long either. My son (9), was content playing games on his tablet and eating chips. There were a few couples nearby - everything was relaxed.

However, it didn’t take long for the waiter to start to ‘gently’ reminding us – mid-meal – that we would have to get going. Now, having spent over 10 years in Berlin, I thought this was very unusual – in that, this was the first time anything like this has ever happened to us. After that, things got worse. When we didn’t jump up mid-drinks and food, he started to hound us and then brought his colleague to further guilt us into going as it was ten minutes past 8pm!

When we questioned this, the hounding became worse. We asked to speak to the manager but he didn’t even bother to come out. Unable to bear it any longer, we paid our bill (well over 100 EUR) and left with a bad taste in our mouths. It was really awful and I would advise that no-one, especially with families, go to the Kilkenny bar. Not when there are dozens of other family friendly places nearby.

Long story short: Families are not welcome in the Kilkenny Irish bar. Go elsewhere.

Firstly i'll say that we visited the pub when it was busy with a euro 2016 game. As we watched the game one of my friends repeatedly said 'sorry' to the female waiter as she passed us in a bid to get a food menu off her. He said this about 5 different times as she directly walked by him. The sixth time she turned around, stood and looked at him for a moment and then turned around and walked on. We then went and took a menu from her work area and again she passed but ever came near us for an order. The height of rudeness. We left the pub and went and got food elsewhere. We then returned later that evening to watch the end of the Masters Golf. As 3 of us were last in the pub watching the golf that night, the barman just switched off the TV without a word directly in front of us as we sat at the bar. The irish way is "sorry lads but i have to switch this off we are closing". The staff were in no way friendly or welcoming and were a variety of nationalities. I see from other reviews the female waiters manners have been called into question before. Me and my friends are extremely disappointed with the overall service of this pub and feel its important management take some steps to improve their customer service or there reputation will be tarnished.

Great atmosphere from the staff and the other customers , food and alcohol prices are same as everywhere else in Berlin so I see some reviews saying expensive but it isn't. The steins are the best decision, worth ordering your drinks from your table with food an then constantly asking for more when you finish as queueing when it is busy took me 40 minutes at one time. Staff all friendly especially the lady with the glasses who kept bringing us our drinks ! She did well to put up with us all.
Had the Kilkenny burger and nachos both were very nice and would visit again
