An very interesting, albeit quite harrowing, tour of the Sachsenhausen camp. Our guide Ronan was extremely knowledgeable, and managed to balance a respectful tour of the camp with a light-hearted and fun train trip to and from Alexanderplatz. Mosaic's not-for-profit status is well worth supporting, and an additional benefit is the small group size.
I showed up for this tour today. It was a nice sized group, about 10. Alicia was our tour guide. I’d love to say the tour was “fun” but the subject is so disturbing that would be wrong. The tour is six hours long, including two hours of commuting from Alexanderplatz. Four hours are spent at Sachsenhausen learning about the horrors of the Nazi regime.
Alicia knew her stuff. The Memorial site is a collection of museums dealing with many aspects of a Camp. Due to time constraints, she couldn’t take us through all of the site but our four hours definitely hit the major points. There were several times I had to turn away from the group and wipe my eyes....the horrors are mind boggling.
Alicia tells you facts, stories and also gives you a few things to think about. As we’re walking through this memorial site you can envision the times she speaks about. Her stories are real and send chills up your spine.
She does a fantastic job of honoring the thousands murdered.
I highly recommend this tour. Just bring tissues.
