Went to the castle as part of our tour through Czech Republic, Germany and Austria. There was construction on the front of the castle which was a little disappointing but the castle is still magnificent. The inside of the castle is prob the most disappointing. It is really bare and they basically never finished most of what they wanted to do on it. The tour guide also seemed pretty clueless unlike other tour guides that we had on the trip. Also if you go make sure you go around the back of the castle down the mountain and up it. Worth the hike for the amazing pictures that you will be able to take.

This castle in reality is much better then on the pictures. It's so huge, so stately. When we saw the interiors we were also amazed - not only the exteriors are really great.
Be aware of several things - there are lots of people, wanting to get there. And you can get in only with a guided tour. So you need to buy tickets. At 1 p.m., after 40 minutes queue, we bought tickets only at 6:05 p.m. to get in. You can get to the castle by bus (it's really high), but be aware, that the last bus departure from the castle is at 6:45 p.m. We didn't know that and needed to get down on foot (long way). And even if we knew - our tickets to the castle wouldn't let us do so (we only finished by 6:50).
Don't miss an opportunity to make pictures of the castle from the bridge, which is several minutes walking on the right side from the bus stop.

We had to wait a few hours for a tour - you are not allowed to walk through without a tour guide or an audio tour. Though we arrived early we had to wait a few hours for a tour in English. It is a bit of a hike up to the castle and then you wait - along with ton of other people - until your tour number comes up. Then you assemble in cattle car like turnstile gates and you are then rushed through, not allowed to take photos, and in our case not given any useful information from the tour guide at all. He could communicate that we were in x room now and soon moving to y room and that was about it. Everything I know about the castle I learned online after the fact. This is a fairly modern castle, late 1800's early 1900's, and was never lived in by the king. It was also never completed so you only get to see a few rooms. The tour is so crowded that you can't even really see the rooms, and you have no time to appreciate the details (and you can't take photos). To top things off almost the entire castle is covered in scaffolding right now so there is no good photo of the castle. Plus, the place is absolutely packed with tourists. Overall though the castle is in a beautiful setting and what I got to see of it was very pretty, it is an overcrowded tourist trap at this point. They are more interested in selling you things through the mandatory gift shop exists than in letting you actually learn or appreciate any of the history. Would not recommend this as we spent more than ha;f a day on it and both left disappointed in the experience.

This is my happiest day after a long time. The best ever day tour i took.It was perfect right from the start.behind success of every tour is the tour guide and our guide Yolanda was a perfect to a 10 . Started off on time , reaching Eseen the bus was waiting to take us to the point . From there Yolanda took us explaining the lake and Ludwigs holiday castle .Excellent wether and beautiful views.
Before starting off had a awesome currywurst at a restuarant there . From there we started walking and though the walk was quite steep , Yolanda made it most interesting explaning us each part of the story of Ludwigs life .Quite a steep walk but enjoyable .
The Marie bridge was astonishing , oh what a view !!!!!
Once reached there , we had to rush as there was an english audio show and we were late and we quickly went through the tour of the castle.
The tour was amazing to see what a life the kings lived especially Ludwig and the opulence they had at that time . Imagine having a telephone is the 18th century .
But i did not know the best was yet to come . The walk back down to bus pick up was the most amazing i ever had . Imagine walking over a waterfall with water gushing with fullest force . And you can touch and feel the force of alpine water. Where do you get to see it ?
It was truly the greatest experience i ever had and Yolanda made it a point to complete the sotry when we were on our back
How i wish my every tour guide is a Yolanda , can i probaly clone her ????
But all my thanks to Radius tour and their wonderful and chirpy tour guide Yolanda .
Could have written much more about the tour but too tired for today

this is so over commercialised its tacky! spoilt! we had to queue at a turnstile similar to a cattle market and wait for our number to be called, were ushered through by a guide on auto pilot had no time to look and wander around to see for ourselves, totally spoilt by over commercialism.
