Room fairly small. Comfortable beds, good shower. Street noisy but earplugs are provided; traffic noise stops overnight though. Blinds on windows to supplement thin curtains. Bottled water provided in room although the seal had been broken.
Excellent breakfast with plenty of variety. Fresh fruit salad was very nice. Twenty different sorts of jam.
Staff pleasant. Were given a jar of jam on departure.
Lockable shed for bicycle storage and we could leave our panniers for the day after checking out.

Having been told by locals that this unassuming Gasthof or inn had very good food, my wife and I decided to try it because it lay along one of the main bus routes and was close to where we were staying. We misunderstood the question if we wished to eat outside, chose the inside, and found a small, very unprepossessing dining room and thought we'd made a mistake. Ordering steaks, we found out our friends were correct: The excellent filets came with four small baked potatoes, and we also ordered a house or mixed salad, which turned out to a generous mixture of marinated and fresh vegetables. The meal was a wonderful respite from Bayreuth's more usual every good if heavy stews (Sauerbratten), many kinds of Wurst, and of course Schnitzel — breaded pork cutlets. Frau Helga took good care of us.

Room Tip: We only used the restaurant

This is a very nice hotel, food is excellent and I like the golden lion in front and the photos on the wall are excellently done. The room was nice and large though the curtains are flimsy. Why did I put this as average. Well on the morning of leaving we wanted to look around Bayreuth before we went onwards. The receptionist had no interest in our questions, sent us the wrong way to the opera house and when a phone call came in did not excuse herself but straight picked up the phone. Staff should be trained no matter where they are on manners and unfortunately this spoiled my view on this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask if any rooms have good curtains.

We stayed 4 nights at this hotel and had a great time. It's not fancy or modern but it has everything you'll need for a short stay at a small town like Bayreuth. Great restaurant with reasonable prices. Rooms not so big but very nice bed (downside for our room was there was no blackout curtains, only a very thin curtain, so in the morning the room would be very bright). They provided us with a free baby bed for our son. Breakfast is the typical German breakfast, with a wide variety of breads, fruits, cheese and wurst. Location is great, just 2 blocks away from the shopping mall and 3 blocks from the city center.

Even when the Wagner Festspiel is not going on, Bayreuth’s hotels are more expensive than you would expect. When it is going on, you have no choice but to pay. That makes the Goldener Löwe a reasonable value for the price. The hotel is on the edge of the city center and near the big mall. Everything except the Festspielhaus is within a 30-minute leisurely walk. The hotel is not especially pretty, but it has some very old elements that give the place charm. The rooms are somewhat Spartan. Street noise is a problem, but there are earplugs among the usual amenities. The breakfast is just what you expect from a German Gasthaus – world class. I have stayed at the GL five times over the years and do not remember the breakfast ever changing. They offer homemade preserves that are nothing special, but not bad. The restaurant is the highlight of the hotel. There is parking available behind the hotel. Just hope it does not rain or snow, for then it is a quagmire. The thing that annoys me most is the Wireless Internet. On earlier stays, it never worked in any of my rooms. Now it apparently works, but I find the prices annoyingly high for what most hotels provide gratis. Still, this is the best value in an over-priced city.
