This was one of the best rooms we had on a recent trip to France and Germany. The Schweizer Hof appears to be a beautifully restored building with comfortable and modern rooms. It is right next to the opera house and about a 10 minute walk to the old central part of Baden-Baden.
Our room was quite large and well-equipped and very reasonably priced. It had a king size bed (two singles together actually), plus desk, couch, armoire, mini-bar, reading chair and night tables, with plenty of floor space left over. The entire outer wall was a series of windows which, instead of being double-paned, were actually two sets of windows, one behind the other. In other words, to open the windows one had to first open the inner one and then the outer one. It's not difficult, it preserved the original windows and provided plenty of sound insulation from the street.
The bathroom was also large, with two sinks, toilet and shower. The shower is a little odd since it opens at the corner of two glass walls instead of on the side. We also found the bathroom lights confusing to turn off as they seemed to require some combination of switches to get them all off at the same time. None of this was a problem, just a little idiosyncratic. I should add that the plastic cups for water in the bathroom were of unusually high quality, not the usual flimsy ones.
We had breakfast at the hotel - it was good but not with a lot of choices. It was heavy on cheeses and great local bread, but not a lot else.
The hotel makes discounted parking available at an underground garage a few hundred meters away, under the opera house. We had trouble figuring out how to work the payment machine and the hotel staff were very helpful in calling the garage attendant to give us a hand. In fact I can't say enough about the staff, both evening and morning. They spoke excellent English and went out of their way to answer every question we had.
The only negative item I can add to this review is that the elevator is not quite on the ground floor, so we had to lug our bags up about a half dozen steps before we could get them into the elevator. Slightly irritating (or maybe our luggage was just too heavy) but hardly a major complaint.
If I were going back to Baden-Baden, I'd stay at the Schweizer Hof again.
