Golden Tulip Villa Massalia
Ranked #29 of 132 Hotels in Marseille
Reviewed 19 September 2012

The hotel is nice, well-appointed. The service is really excellent. From the hotel's website, I expected more of a resort feel, but its location made it less so. I was surprised at the urban location and all that comes with that (noise, poor view). The hotel is a brief taxi ride to the beach, stores, etc, so it depends on what sort of experience you're looking for. The rooms are fair, although I did miss having a full length mirror. The Wifi service was poor, which was really my only avoidable disappointment with the hotel. I was there for business meetings and found the facilities well-suited for that. Overall, a good stay-- I ranked the experience 'very good' on the basis of the superior service....this hotel makes a good effort with its limitations.

Room Tip: Request a room facing the racetrack or pool.

Dear CJSToronto,

Thank you for taking time to give a complete review on your stay.
We are glad to read that you enjoyed our hotel despite its location close to the beaches and the National Parc of the Calanques. We are indeed further away from the city center than other hotels but our locations provides to our travelling guests the idea of holliday even when they are in Marseille for Business purposes.

We hope to have the pleasure to welcome you soon again.

Stayed one night in this hotel with my boyfriend to enjoy the surroundings of Cassis.
The plus:
- friendly staff
- good breakfast
- clean room
The minus:
- room with 'city view' = view on petrol station
- noisy room: traffic + people in room next door
- not much to do around unless you take your car

Decent value for money overall but not the most romantic place.

Dear odyssea76,

We would like to thank you for taking time to give a review of your journey in our Hotel. Your comments regarding our staff is our best reward.

We have indeed several types of rooms which offer different views: our superior rooms offer a city view while our Deluxe room offer either a view on the horserace or on the sea. We would advise you to give this type of room a try for your next stay.

We hope to have the pleasure to welcome you again for your next trip in Marseille.

We have just returned from a trip to France during which we split out time between Aix-en-Provence and Marseille. We spent four nights in the Villa Masalia and thoroughly enjoyed a very relaxing and luxurious stay.

When we arrived we were a little disappointed at being quite as far out of the centre of Marseille (about 15mins by car or 25 Euros by taxi!) We were even more disappointed when we called down to reception to ask if there were some nice local seafront restuarants as it was fairly late and by the time we had unpacked etc it was also dark. We were very pretentiously informed that they could not possibly make any recommendations in relation to the restuarants we were referring, and that they only recommended the very famous restaurants in Marseille! Regretably we opted for Room Service - a salmon club sandwich - a bit strange, in that the bread used tasted and looked like pizza base! One piece on top, salmon in the middle with a little horseraddish sauce, and another piece on the bottom??

We took a taxi into Marseille the following evening, and were very disappointed. Sadly, Le Vieux Port and most of Marseille centre is currently undergoing major construction and redevelopment. There were building works and road works everywhere. It was quite unpleasant. When we returned to the hotel, we were very grateful to be staying that little bit further out and felt greatly comforted by the luxury the hotel offered. The hotel itself is extremely modern and very clean. The staff are helpful and pleasant. The pool and spa area are lovely, and again very clean. The breakfast, included in our rate, was particularly good and the restuarant and bar areas are very contemporary and ambient.

On our last night, on the way back in yet another taxi from Marseille, we were distracted by the big wheel, and so asked the driver to let us out there (a 5 min walk from the hotel). We were very pleasantly surprised to see a number of popular seafront restuarants still buzzing at around midnight. Sadly though, we hadn't realised what we had on our doorstep until then and kicked ourselves for spending over 100 Euros on taxis! C'est la vie!

We got a really good deal on the hotel through Voyage Prive, not sure if we would choose to go back again unless we got the same deal. All in all though we had a fantastic time.

Room Tip: Opt for a sea view or a partial sea view.

I obtained this hotel through bidding on Priceline and was very happy with the price. The staff was quite nice and accommodating. The room was very clean and well decorated. My particular room did not have much of a view but that was OK. I was daunted by the thought of a 21 euro breakfast when all I normally have for breakfast is a cup of coffee. The trouble is that there is no where close by that I saw to buy coffee. Which leads me to my only concern...

The hotel is far off the beaten track. It as a very expensive taxi ride from the station. Once there, there is a convenient bus service to the center but if you have lots of luggage, then this is difficult. However, the beach is very close by with lots of restaurant options.

Dear jsch3,
Thank you for your nice comments about our hotel. We have indeed 4 types of rooms in our accomodation. It seems you were in one of our Superior rooms whixh have a view on the city. Why not try a Deluxe room for your next stay? They have a sea view and thereby, a free Expresso Coffee Machine.

Our hotel is situated at 200m of the nicest beaches of Marseille, but indeed further away from the city center.

We hope to have the pleasure to welcome you soon again.

I needed to spend a night in Marseille, and needed above all a private parking for my car. So I was not really keen on having a luxury hotel this time. But to my great suprise this was the case (I guess I paid the price for it, although breakfast was not included in the overly priced night).
The hotel is great! The staff is very professional. Something I didn't know: in Marseille you have to ask for a non-smoking room in order to have one. The first room they gave me was smelling aweful, althought great care was taken to contain the smoke smell. They kindly transferred me into another floor (they have smoking and non-smoking floors) where I could enjoy the huge bed and the quality of the room.
I'd recommend it if you need to park your car safely.
